| ¡De Madrid al Cielo! |
|
Is there anything better than getting up on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee, head's still a bit groggy, and sitting down at the computer for LIVE news, music, or watching television coming directly to you FROM Spain?! Or maybe you're at the office and you have some lively flamenco music playing in the background. Either way, it still seems magical that we can enjoy SO many of the wonderful sights and sounds of Spain from wherever we are in the world - LIVE!
Here at MadridMan's Spanish Radio, TV, Music, & Movies you can feel like you're there, listening to or watching local news coverage of what's happening in Spain, a part of the world about which we all care so much. You can watch live Holy Week processions or traffic jams and listen to Top40 songs or hear people on quirky late-night call-in shows lamenting about lost loves. We can even WATCH regional specials, movies, or afternoon talk-shows. But whatever your interest you can likely find it here. So sit back, use your imagination, and let your ears and eyes carry you to Spain. Enjoy!

|
| ¡De Madrid al Cielo! |
|
Music from Spain is a BIG part of my DAILY life. Not only does it fool a part of my brain to thinking I'm living in Spain but it also helps me learn Spanish while enjoying soulful tunes. Below many listings you'll find some short song clips which were found on the artists' website since I'm not legally able to "reproduce" their works. Please visit their websites for more songs, lyrics, and music videos in some cases as well as concert tour schedules.
It's true. I do enjoy Flamenco music. It ALWAYS raises the blood pressure and helps a workday pass quickly. But more than flamenco I enjoy listening to a select number of bands and solo artists. Many of these developed their craft by singing and playing guitar for change in Madrid's Retiro Park or on Spain's city sidewalks and plazas. To me, it's amazing how much talent these people have but a lot of that talent is derived from the passion they obviously feel for their music. I admire and envy them all.
Below, I've listed my favorite groups/solo artists in order of my favorites with my very favorite at the top. They're all from Spain but not all got their start in Madrid. I hope you enjoy these wonderful artists as much as I do. They've given me such GREAT pleasure over the years and I'd like to expose you to them if you've never yeard of them before. My incentive here is NOT monetary gain (although you may buy their CDs if you wish) but to aid in choosing GOOD MUSIC in the future.

Ismael Serrano
Music Type:Folk/Pop
web: www.IsmaelSerrano.com
website: lyrics, music clips, discography, concert dates
Description: Ismael Serrano is MadridMan's absolute favorite singer! A friend turned me on to his music last year and now I'm a BIG fan. Ismael Serrano's deep & soulful lyrics and voice as well as expert guitar brings emotion with every song. His latest CD "Traiciones de Wendy" is his best produced CD but I prefer his previous album "Los Paraísos Desiertos" which includes the emotional "Kilometer 0", a song about the city of Madrid and its Puerta del Sol.

KETAMA
Music Type:Pop-Flamenco/Folk
web: www.DameLaMano.com
website:Biography, discography, concert dates
Description: MadridMan is a BIG KETAMA fan and owns their last several CDs. This band appeals to a wide audience for its fusion of flamenco and pop. LOTS of toe-tapping and hand-clapping songs as well as catchy instrumentals. Always producing HIT CDs, their current CD "Dame la Mano" doesn't disappoint but is hard to find as yet. Their previous CD, "Toma KETAMA!" is equally popular and their 17-song greatest hits CD "KONFUSION" is a MUST HAVE.

Doctor Grillo w/ Paco Bello
Music Type:Folk/Pop
web: www.DoctorGrillo.net
website: lyrics, music clips, discography, concert dates
Description: Paco Bello is the headmaster of "Doctor Grillo". Before forming the band with Raúl Hernández he sang beautiful duets with Mofli in the group Nauta. I miss this collaboration. But still, Paco Bello continues to give us enchanting songs and hold concerts in small venues in Spain, mainly Madrid, and unfortunately his music is difficult to find outside of the country. He is a wonderful songwriter.

Alejandro Sanz
Music Type:Pop/Love songs
web: www.AlejandroSanz.com
website: music/video clips, lyrics, discography
Description: Alejandro Sanz continues to perform and create at an unusually high level and each CD seems to be better than the last. Sanz was probably MadridMan's first introduction to Spanish pop music and now he's hooked. Sanz's last 4 award-winnning CDs of soft/sensual tones, disco-pumping tracks, and live/spontaneous recordings give his popularity staying power. Good music for everyone. His NEWEST CD, "No es lo Mismo", is an amazing collection of songs. This is NOT typical POP MUSIC, no. There's a wonderful mix of Spanish guitar as well as trademark Sanz Songs.

Victor Manuel & Pablo Milanes
Music Type:Pop/Folk/Traditional songs
Description: A friend bought this long-running CD for me years ago. It's a 1995 live concert recording from Málaga's bullring with Victor Manuel (from Andalucía) and Pablo Milanes (from Cúba) singing traditional Spanish songs as well as some of their own work. Not your typical live recording but HIGH quality, clear, and pure tunes from both artists. The duets are just beautiful, sometimes tearful, and always touching. With piano, guitar, and orchestral accompaniment make the recording an instant classic. A must-have in any Spanish collection.

| Notes from MadridMan: |
|
| "Tapas & wine go well with movies from Spain!" |
|
Movies from Spain allow us to see parts of this beautiful country we can't experience for ourselves. Also, we get to see a "theatrical portrayal" of life in Spain - no matter how real or unreal (i.e. movies by Pedro Almodóvar). Don't be scared by subtitles, either. Funny how you hardly notice them after watching/reading the first few minutes of a movie.
Generally speaking, movies from Spain are much simpler and psychological than those you'll find in, say, the USA. Rarely do you see special effects, large explosions, car chases, or unrealistic stunts. BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER but don't try to prove this to Hollywood. Spaniards do love their movies, though. They want to be moved. They want the stories to be thought-provoking. Some want their movies to be political or societal in theme. Rarely do you watch a USA based movie and say "WOW. That was incredible" but rather. "Hmm! That was good" and the movie is quickly forgotten. Spanish films, good ones, keep your attention, make you think, and stay with you long afterwards. So enjoy these and any Spanish movies you can get your hands/eyes on.

Movie Type: period, love story
Websites: IMDB.com

|
 |
La Lengua de las Mariposas (Butterfly) 1999
Movie Type: period, societal, political
Websites: Edgewood University & IMDB.com
Director: José Luis Cuerda
Description: A MadridMan FAVORITE! "Butterfly" is an absorbing story about young, innocent brothers of a tailor living in Galicia, Spain just before the civil war begins, and as you already may guess, it begins sweetly and ends sadly. The focus of the film is set on the relationship between the younger brother Moncho and his retiring old teacher. And around them well-drawn people of a Spanish village in winter, 1936, are portrayed.

 |
Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) 1999
Movie Type: touching & psychological
Websites: FilmCritic.com & IMDB.com
Director: Alejandro Amenábar
Description: "Set in Madrid, the story defies description, but this much can be revealed: young, handsome Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) is vain, rich, charming, and--following a botched suicide-murder scheme by a jilted lover--horribly disfigured. He'd fallen in love with Sofia (Penélope Cruz) but is now an embittered husk of his former self, stuck in a "psychiatric penitentiary" on a murder charge and hiding behind an expressionless mask."
