There is a strike organized by employees of Madrid's metro system. This will be an all-day, total 24-hour per day strike for 28, 29, and 30 June 2010 to protest the recent salary cuts.

It seems they've agreed to have "minimum service" the first day of the strike but after that they don't expect to operate at all. Great. And I'm coming back to Madrid on 30 June and had expected to use the metro home. Guess the taxis will be busier these days!

Madridiario article here (in Spanish) . rolleyes

I just got an e-mail from RENFE saying thay will be striking on the 25th of June ( tomorrow ) . Great timing and PR after what happened in Catalunya last night ! Sp also bear in mind that there's likely to be major disruption to train services just South of Barcelona . Spanish news are saying that replacement bus services will be available .

RENFE , for those that do not know , is the national train company .

Thankfully the regional (green busses) aren't on strike. I wondered what was happening, waited at Moncola for almost 15 mins for line 3 metro to show up and then it was packed, same with line 10. As well today my usual one hour journey (from Villalba to Colsada in the south) took me almost 2 hours today.

I'm really really hoping things will be back to normal on the 1st as I'm bouncing all around the city that day!

yes buses are running 100% of them out on the streets, full max out but running

possible govt of Madrid action against strikers for not following the minimum service rule as here, they are breaking the law. Files are being look at for possible personnel penalties ie firings. also the union leader who said MADRID WILL EXPLODE, is being look at legally to bring criminal actions against him as this is considered a thread against public safety.

Its going to be bad for the users there for tom and maybe more, dont look good, this people dont understand what they are doing to Madrid. good luck to users there now.

Someone told me that yesterday and the day before, the 29th & 30th, several metro lines were totally shut down and their metro station entrances gated.

Today's Madridiario article on the topic says metro trains will continue to operate at 50% capacity today. No word yet about tomorrow/Friday. Cross your fingers. xfingers

i saw telemadrid program where a guy was going to purchase a ticket in Sol, and the camerawoman ask him if he knew there is a strike and the guy did not know, and was from Madrid lol!!! very embarrasing. the machines to validate were all empty not a soul.

maybe they convince the union people that they have to provide minimum service as per the law, and they are coming to senses. Good for the users in Madrid.

We will see Monday when they have a meeting at 10h30 to see about continuing the strike or whats cooking in their brains.

MM that´s true ... I´ve used the metro yesterday and the day before , but the 2 days of June was a shut down . And in Plaza de Chueca yesterday , whilst I was enjoying a glass of vino , I noticed tape lying on the ground saying ... No pasar - Metro de Madrid ... I took a photo ( no surprise I guess )

Tomorrow/Wednesday and Friday will be the next Metro Strike days. THEY CLAIM they'll operate at 50% so prepare yourselves for "accidental" stoppages of that 50% on those days.
