My June trip from Madrid to Columbus, Ohio through New York's JFK cost me $724, bought about 10 days ago through http://www.ORBITZ.com . But when I bought they said only 4 tickets were left at that price. I was happy at that price - but not happy that my credit card was charged twice (once from Orbitz and again from Delta Airlines). I'm still trying to get the one charge removed. Headache! Saludos, MadridMan

The airfares are really high this summer; in fact, they prevented me from making a trip to Madrid this year. And, the frequent flyer miles aren't much help as the flights are either not available or they require an exorbitant amount of miles to redeem. I know that Spain recently started a new tourism campaign called "I Need Spain." Unfortunately, unless the airfare prices drop significantly, it will be difficult for people from the US to travel there no matter how much we all need Spain! Here's hoping next year's prices will be better!

A thing I learned when our local airline (Northwest) merged with Delta was to use their cash for miles function. With their American Express credit card (Free for the first year, 20,000 bonus miles and I got 2 free passes to the first class lounges), you get $100 off for every 10,000 miles you give them on most fares with no blackouts.
I've used it several times now and hope to use it all up soon so I can cancel the card before my second year fees kick in!

Yes! Keep looking for deals. I snagged a Chicago to Madrid NS on Iberia for $1020...FOR TWO!! Weeks prior I was seeing $16-1700. It pays to keep checking. No really, this is for awesome-real; I bought on 3.10.10.
Keep the faith...

I read recently in USAToday.com that airlines would offer fewer summer discounts this year as compared to last.
As mentioned earlier, I was VERY happy to "snag" a June 2010 Madrid-to-Columbus, Ohio Delta flight for $724. Last year's July flight cost me $1,074. My October 2008 flight cost me $1,170. August 2006 flight cost $1,290. So as you can imagine, I'm quite happy with this year's bill.

Maybe so. I'm checking right now, same June dates for which I already have the ticket, and now the lowest price is $11 cheaper (on American Airlines) at http://www.Orbitz.com . What do you people use to find your airfares? Saludos, MadridMan

I think Kayak is pretty reliable. And recently I have been looking at Fare Compare

laduque, Believe me, I'm totally bummed as I'd been planning to go this summer since my last trip (when I saw you and MM and everyone else)! I guess it's not meant to be this year but hopefully next year we can have a little reunion. I had so much fun at our dinner that evening. In the meantime, I expect lots of updates while you guys are there this summer.

Before I bought my ticket in March, I checked everywhere Kayak, FareCompare,Travelocity and then USAir. All were a bit higher than USAir for the same flights, then I just jumped when it went down $100 (thanks to a tip from Jim Costello). Of course, I made the mistake of checking the fares about 2 weeks later and they were down another $100(bummer), but now back up even more. I should say also that I am going in May, not Ju, Jy or Aug when they are higher still.

I use Orbitz.com mainly because it's an all-in-one website created BY the US airline industry. Before buying anything on Orbitz, I always go to that airline's website to compare prices and they're always at least a little cheaper (if only by $10) on Orbitz.com.

According to today's USAToday.com article entitled, " Airfares to Europe fall from where they were in January": A big drop in airfares to several European destinations suggests airlines expect less trans-Atlantic traffic this summer. Fares to select European cities from the U.S. have fallen dramatically — down as much as 68% — from January when airlines were charging steep prices, according to airfare shopping site Bestfares.com. "We've seen real good drops," says Bestfares.com CEO Tom Parsons. "(Some who booked earlier) could be entitled to a voucher or refund for the difference." The drop stems from airlines' aggressive pricing earlier this year in anticipation of robust travel that hasn't panned out, Parsons says. "Americans just weren't going to pay that kind of money," he says.( Read more...) That's GREAT news!! Come on, world! Come to Spain! Saludos, MadridMan
