I read that too!!! That's terrrible! They say that's a 55% increase in just 4 years. What's the start date for the new price, jazz? Is it 1 January 2010? Probably. I'll have to read up on that. I can see raising it to 8€ but bumping it WAY UP to 9€ seems more than drastic!!

Whilst it is bad news , in terms of links to national growth etc... , Madrid even with a 9 Euro Metrobus will still be cheaper than most European capital cities . In my city ( London ) you have to pay almost 4.50 Euros just for one metro journey !!! That´s worth complaining about !

Wow!! You have a point there, steve robinson. So at 0.90 Eurocents we should still be happy. But with SUCH a sudden and steep raise in price I think that's too much at one time.

I had a 10 ride ticket for the Madrid metro and buses from a previous visit about 3 years ago. It had 5 rides left. I was surprised to discover I could still use it on my visit last month.

In Barcelona it seems that every visit I have to buy a new one, since the old one never still works.

Somebody may want to correct me on this . Usually a metro ticket ( 10 journeys = Metrobus ) is valid for 1 month only . I certainly found that out when I found a ticket in a jacket pocket and tried to use it . The lady at the Metro told me it was invalid ( from a few months ago ) . So I think you were very lucky Donna ... and I can´t think of an explanation as to why it still was valid .

Metro tickets never expire, you can redeem when the rates go up, paying the difference. In "Cercanias" singles tickets are worth only 24 hours and 10 travel (bonotren) worth for a month.

4,50€ single ticket in London, but more cheaper with oyster card or travel card, am I wrong?

You´re right Jazz .. The oyster card makes journey´s cheaper in London ...But it´s still incredibly expensive when you compare it to othe cities in Europe , and even cities like New York or Vancouver .

still a bargain allright, in Paris its 1,60 single ticket and 11,40 for the carnet of 10. of course, in Madrid, they have build up tremendously since well a few years back.....

what does "ticket 10 trip" mean?

i think i know the answer, but just to clarify, when you buy a single ticket, is that one way? or does it take you back from where you started as well?

I think he meant a "ten trip ticket" will be 9€. The tickets are good for both local buses and metro.

It is one way. you have to use your ticket each time you enter the subway. You can transfer on one ticket. For example, I went from Barajas to Sol on one ticket, but I transferred twice.

A word of caution . When you buy any ticket on the metro , make sure you keep hold of it ! Whilst inspectors on the metro are almost non-existent I have had 2 occasions ( in 5 years ) where they asked to se my ticket on the train . Failure to produce it will result in a fine of some sort . Also if you´re travelling from the centre to the airport ( you have to pay a supplement ) you WILL need the ticket to exit ( normally you only use the ticket to enter the metro ) .. so don´t throw it away !

yes indeed keep your ticket until you are out of the metro system. Some can update on the fines now, but in my neck of the woods is 28 euros, and 42 euros if using a discounted ticket when you should not.

It should also be repeated that single-trip metro/bus tickets remain the same price (for now) at just 1 Euro. I'll feel bad when they raise that amount to 1.20 Euros, for example, and the poor bus driver will have to make change - WHILE DRIVING (which is what they do, amazingly).

Well think about the poor people in London ! A ticket to go , for example from Liverpool Street to Charing Cross ( That´s like Goya to Sol .. a short journey ) will cost 4 pounds ( more or less 4 Euros ) !! Unbelievable ! Madrid , even if it does go up to 1.20 ( and it will ! ) Is still a real bargain !
