I took the metro from the airport to the Atocha on Monday...It is a breeze. Change at Nuevos Ministeros to the Cercains line...well marked....will need to up the regular travel ticket from the aiport at T2, and purchase a Cercinas ticket at NM from the freestanding booth. When you arrive at Atocha, you then enter the main terminal, exit the ticket gates, and the booth for the train tickets is only steps away. Not long at all and no crowds at 945 am.
