it seems like a trivial thing but today I came across your blog and went to comment and came across the dreaded

Sign in to comment on this entry.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo help

Seems like a small thing but this is the third time I've come across this today and I already belong to far to many communities than I can track and have no interest in joining more. The worse of it each one of the blogs I viewed today used a different community which meant 3 different sign ups emails confirmation emails etc, way too much work to post an occasional comment. As well the nature of blogs are, unlike BB, such that you may only visit and comment once.

I'll add your blog to my google reader as your an entertaining writer, but as to signing up to comment, too much work.

If you want to edit comments simply add that feature many blogs do. As well I'd add an "email follow up comments" option as well, but please delete the please sign in feature. For blogs they are really annoying

Thanks Rob in Madrid (formally timhortonsman - not sure what I'll do if I ever move wink )

Thanks for the comments, Tim Horton's Man (have you already changed your visible username? It still shows as Tim Hortons Man).

And I agree with you 100%. That's why I'd set the Madrid Blog to allow anyone to comment .... WITHOUT having to register or sign up. BUT OBVIOUSLY that has taken - and I don't know why. I'll look deeper into the issue and let you know here in this thread.

Sorry about that. The function is, of course, another step to avoid SPAM. You may have seen a number of Blogs which allow comments freely posted without registration but they're often peppered with spam. That, I'd like to avoid.

The software, MovableType , is an add-on directly from my web hosting service so I cannot personally, necessarily make little tweaks outside of the confines of the software. I'm no programmer. And not even sure, by license with the software company, I'd be able to do it.

Thanks again for your comments.

Saludos, MadridMan

Yeah I've slowly changing all my user names over to Rob in Madird. Not sure what I'll do if we ever move laugh

To avoid spam some blogers preview all comments before posting. That's quite commom.

Got it

I guess because sometime a long time ago I signed up with vox it automatically detects it and wants me to sign in accordingly. I also discovered I have a vox blog http://robinmadrid.vox.com/ which I've never used but I need it to sign in. So now that that's done I can be the first person to comment on your Blog

"Rob in Madrid", you're STILL Tim Horton's Man here. You have to change it in your profile as the name visible to the public. You may have only changed your sign-in username.

I thought I'd have a read of the blog and post a comment. Very entertaining MM and recommended reading. clap

Just to confirm I did need to sign in and set up an account too, which didn't bother me as much as Tim Hortons Man / Rob in Madrid as I'm a bit bored at work today.

Yes. It seems a steadfast rule with MovableType blogs. One MUST register and sign in to post comments. In that respect, I don't care much for this system as with, say, Blogger.com, we can make the settings to allow comments from anyone without registering.

I'm moving my blog over to wordpress from blogger inspite of the sign in to comment problem. The reason is it's more user (read idiot proof) freindly. I couldn't get half the options (pictures etc) to work. I also found the help and FAQ was pretty useless.

I think it's more me than blogger as I read loads of blogs with gagets photos charts all kinds of things add in. What finally got me was the difficulty of upload and editing (read add a comment to) photos.

rob aka tim hortons man

found this on wordpress.com

Resolved: Why can\'t people comment without logging in?

Yup. That's great for Wordpress users but it doesn't work on MovableType, unfortunately. On my control panel in the COMMENTS page I've checked the box to allow ANYONE to make comments but makes no mention about whether or not commenters must be logged in. However, I've found through the "users manual" that yes, they must be logged in to comment.

By the way, TRACKBACKS have yielded nothing but SPAM submissions so I'm likely going to disable that feature on the Madrid blog .

I was using Wordpress on my website, but move to Joomla a year ago. I moved because I was being spammed via the Comments and Contact Me features in Wordpress.

I had only one a security problem for the entire year since moving to Joomla.
