I watched it by chance just tonight! Didn't even know it was going to be on. Interesting segment. Both those brothers speak English amazingly well. Both had gone to "camp" of some sort in Main and Indiana, USA and the older brother lived for awhile in Santa Monica (?), California. It's interesting they continue to call them "Matadors" when in Spain they're called "Toreros", "Matadors" are what they're called in Latin America.

The segment to which eskimo joe links above is only a 1-minute portion of the entire 10-minute feature.

eskimo joe, WHERE were you able to watch it? Do you have satellite television (CBS from the USA???) from your work site?

Saludos, MadridMan

They had previews on earlier. I think they wait a bit before they make the whole piece available.

60 Minutes also did a piece on Francisco 10 years ago. You can see a highlight on the website. His family sent him to the US to attend a college on the east coast (I forget which). He actually lived in a dorm amongst the students, which explains his english.
I think the reporter, Bob Simon must be an aficionado. He also did the earlier piece.

The family link they didn't mention was the great grandfather, also named Cayetano, (father of Antonio) who went by the name "Nino de la Palma". He was the model for matador Pedro Romero in the Hemingway novel "The Sun Also Rises" and was excoriated for his cowardice in "Death in the Afternoon".

See you in a couple of weeks!

You can see Cayetano cutting an ear at his confirmacion in Las Ventas in June here- Video He is the last on with the silver on black suit.

I FOUND IT! You can watch the entire 13 minute second segment on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U11HNjPD-I . The segment is called "Blood Brothers".

The brothers are correct in calling themselves "Matadores" because they are the bullfighters that kill the bull. In the cuadrilla all members are toreros but only the principle fighter is called matador, his title therefore is matador de toros or killer of bulls. It is a hierarchy. Bullfighters don't start off as matadores, they apprenctice and when they start fighting young bulls they are called novilleros until such time they are ready to fight. A special fight is held called the Alternative where the young torero is presented as a matador de toros.

Now, whether the term has been generalized now a days I down't know.

It was a good segment and interview. I'm glad they didn't put a negative spin on bullfighting which I thought they would.

Damn .. I really want to see that CBS special ! Eskimo Joe : Have you got any plans to do some more bullfighting ?I know you have a bairn to look after now but ........
Some board members may not be aware of the fact that here in Spain we have something called "Una Capea" .
It's a party held at a ranch ( bulls ) where you get to barbecue , drink sangria , and then go into a bullring with a young bull ( with horns ! ) .
I did it a few years ago ...It took a LOT of sangria to get me face to face with the bull . I was hiding behind the buladeros for a while before I ventured out .
The bull may have been young but it was very fast and very aggressive ! . Infact a girl ( Amy ) from Los Angeles , went before me and got hit and tossed into the air ( she was OK ) .That really didn't help my feeling about the whole thing !
Well I managed about 6 passes with the bull ... I was very proud .

REALLY!? confused I did not know that. I wonder why you never hear anyone utter the word "Matador" in Spain then, not by voice, TV, or newsprint. And why, when one does a good job they chant, "¡TORERO! ¡TORERO! ¡TORERO!"

Steve Robinson, you can watch that entire CBS special via the link I post above from YouTube.

Don't know MM...maybe it's a political correctness thing to appease the animal lovers out there as the word matador means killer. All the great bullfighters were once know as matadores.

You may want to stop by the restaurant "La Taberna de Antonio Sanchez" there in Madrid. It is a restaurant dedicated to bullfighting memorabilia and named after the son of the founder who died in the bullring. It was established in 1850. You may be familiar with it. They may be able to give you some info regarding the difference and if in fact the title has been changed.

Here is a url for the restaurant:
