I hadn't hear about the free fish thing. But it might have simply been a "publicity effort" because of yesterday's fisherman's union demonstration downtown (as they do every year) over the high cost of petroleum and how that affects their profit margin.

But now that I look online, I find the below about it:

Fishermen in Spain, Portugal and Italy Strike to Protest Fuel Prices
By VOA News

People gather to receive free fish
during a protest in Madrid, Spain, 30 May 2008

Thousands of fisherman from Spain, Portugal and Italy have gone on strike to join other European protests against soaring fuel prices.

Spanish fisherman say almost the entire Spanish fleet, the largest in Europe, remained in port on Friday. Trawlers and larger commercial boats also remained docked at ports across Portugal. And in Italy, about 12,000 fisherman joined the strike.

French fisherman have already been on strike for two weeks, at times blocking oil terminals and disrupting shipping traffic.

In Madrid Friday, fishermen gathered outside the Environment, Agriculture and Fishing Ministry, where they handed out more than 20 tons of free fish to try to win public support.

The fisherman say rapidly rising fuel costs are threatening their livelihoods.

Spanish Economy Minister Pedro Solbes told reporters Friday the government is looking into ways to help the fishermen but can not cut fuel taxes.
Sheesh! Looking at that photo, someone in Dallas, Texas (for example) might think people in Spain were starving to death! I don't imagine a day of "free fish" will win the support of the public. The public will only care when the NEXT "Free Fish Day" will be scheduled. But no doubt the strike will raise the price of fish and seafood in Spain even higher than it already is - DUE TO the high price of fuel. Surely there's not a single fuel-efficient, low-emissions fishing vessel in the entire fleet across the Mediterranean - that might be a good place to start. Water vessels are among the biggest air polluters on the planet and have little or no regulation.

So the Free Fish Giveaway was only yesterday. Sorry! The rest of us missed out. rolleyes

Saludos, MadridMan

the problem then arises if they do reduce fuel price the price of fish will not go down
years ago rain washed all the potato farm in Ireland the price of potatoes rocketed up, next year they had a fine crop but price of the potato stayed the same
the fuel is afecting EVERY buisness in the world so something must be done and quickly as everything is on the up with prices, the price os stuff must come down if fuel price reduces
you think you have it bad, in Britain it is £1.28pr litre the highest in europe if not the world the tax is 55% on the fuel so somebody is making a lot of money mad
