I read in the newspaper recently that Sony is releasing a collection of eight films directed by Pedro Almodovar called Viva Pedro-Pedro Almodovar Classics Collection.
The films include: "Matador," "Law of Desire," "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," "The Flower of My Secret," "Live Flesh," "All About My Mother," "Talk to Her" and "Bad Education."
Apparently there is a bonus disc of featurettes, too. I think this is great since some of these movies were not previously available on DVD, and some others were out of production for awhile.

Esperanza,
This puzzles me too as to why there are no Spanish subtitles. HEARING IMPAIRED . . . Do they not exist in Spain or do they have a special DVD that we don't know about?
I would like to see volver again and this time with Spanish subtitles.
Hope all is well with you.
Besos,
Shawn

pedmar,
I totally understand what you say, but you missed the point of what Esperanza and I are asking for. We are Spanish teachersand would love to have it with Spanish subtitles so that our students can hear and see Spanish. It defeats the purpose in the Spanish classroom when students hear Spanish, but directly read the English. Most of them will stop listening to the Spanish.
So, I am glad to see these DVDs in action.
By the way, there are a ton of Spanish movies coming on HBO Latino. I saw OCULTO last night. Very good film. So, if you have HBO LAtino and understand Spanish very well, check out their all Spanish language films.

if you are in the US you can tune in to Univision and TV America sometimes I remember at night on the weekend they run movies;you can tape them and show them in class. But once again, no SUBTITLES in Spanish. I wonder if this will be an option (Spanish audio and Spanish subtitles) with newer DVDs. How do deaf people watch DVDs is beyond me if they only speak Spanish. Shawn

pedmar,
Your not being tough at all. You fail to see that Esperanza and I are talking about something that doesn't seem to exist. We are not talking about immersion programs. We are talking about finding DVDs with Spanish audio and Spanish subtitles. Nothing more, nothing less.
I'm going to do some research on this. It has to exist somehwere. I'll be back with an answer.

Most (or all) of the "Buy El País on Sunday and get XYZ DVD for only 4 Euros" DVDs don't have ANY subtitle options - they're always in Original Version in Spanish so I can't even read English OR Spanish subtitles. We have a large collection of DVDs but I never watch them (top titles, too!) because of this fact.

In Spain nearly all normal DVD releases have "castellano para sordos" subtitles. The Spanish DVD releases are always different from the US versions. You would just need to get a multizone/zone-free DVD player to play them (or download software that enables you to play them on your computer). You can also download most of these movies as torrents and then download the subtitles separately and recompile.
It's true that the El Pais cheap DVDs that come with the paper don't have any subtitles, but these are special barebones copies. You can usually find regular commercial releases of most of these films.

Thank you madridmadridmadrid for understanding what I was trying to say. I knew that it exists, but wasn't quite sure where. Once again, we have to buy DVDs directly from Spain to get this option and you bring up another point about the DVD region. That's always a pain, but at least you can find a region-free DVD, but the cost is through the roof. Uff!
Thanks again,
Shawn

madridmadridmadrid, I asked the guy (an older buy who had been working there for years) at my local Expert TV/Stereo shop if he knew of a "Region Free" DVD player and he said he'd never heard of one. I'm aware there are "hacks" one can use on certain machines to make them work for both regions - I did that for mine here and screwed it up now it doesn't work properly. I want an "out-of-the-box", factory made region-free DVD player. Seems they're rare/scarce here in Spain. Sorry, that was all off-topic. Saludos, MadridMan

Hmm, none of the big name companies make them, but I think they are a lot easier to find here than in the US. I know for sure that they sell them at FNAC.
I bought a new one at Christmastime for around 70 euros--the brand was Sunstech and it came with TDT. (We bought another one there a couple of years ago... not sure why, but our DVD players usually die after about three years.)
As I remember, it didn't actually say on the box that it was multizone/code-free. But the sales guy assured us that it was. The zone was set to 0, so everything plays on it. You could bring along a US DVD to try it out before you buy... the challenge is trying to find a time to go when the place isn't mobbed with people (a weekday in the morning would be the way to go).
The whole zone thing really is a royal pain. It just encourages people to download even more. Especially now that you can play DIVX and MPEGs on pretty much any DVD player.
