Quite a long time since the last post here. Does anyone want to talk again about Spanish music? :hdspin:

Nah. No one likes Spanish music here. wink hehehe... JUST KIDDING! SURE! Let's talk!

Since this thread ended in July 2006, Melendi , while already popular, has REALLY become explosively popular. His "Me Gusta el Fútbol" took him to the next level in popularity with another part of society, I'm sure, but I don't like this song too much.

Lately, I'm diggin' Zaragozan band Amaral , featuring lead singer Eva Amaral . Antonio, you mentioned her on Page 1 of this thread.

Someone also mentioned La 5a Estacion . Good music from them! And I didn't realize they were a Mexican group!

When I go to the gym I always listen to Los 40 Principales so I'm rather UP on the Top 40 music in Spain. It's amazing to me (although I shouldn't me so amazed) that about HALF of the songs in the Top40 are in English.

Saludos, MadridMan

actually they are more popular outside of Spain, ie Enrique Iglesias, I know i found out about him in florida USA.
This is true of many others who are known outside their country of birth. Antonio Machin was a great bolero singer, even has a street in Sevilla name after him, really known in Spain; he was from Cuba not too many heard of him there;unless pass thru Spain.
the list goes on....

I have the collection from AMARAL, and also Merche Trujillo.

billy the man, I wish Enrique Iglesias wouldn't stand anywhere in Spanish music :yuck:

It's a shame many popular Spanish bands are not known abroad.

MadridMan talked about Los 40 principales , probably the most well-known / popular Spanish music radio. Unfortunately, their list is not related to the number of records sold or the popularity of a band. It just have to do with the money companies pay to have their singers / bands on the list.

I'm going to suggest a Spanish band that some of you may like: Kiko y Shara . Although it's mostly regarded as a "teenagers band", I really love some of their songs. You can listen to their latest album for free on the website and even watch a few videos (Multimedia section). Check out Puede ser (the most popular one), Adolescentes or Mi primera vez

MadridMan, La 5ª Estación is a Spanish band. However, they were not popular here in Spain until they became famous in Mexico. That's why they have an official website there.

Unfortunately here we don't have a lot of music from Spain. Most of the Spanish language channels play regional Mexican music (which isn't to my taste, as much as I try to appreciate it) or reggaeton. Reggaeton is fine in small doses but after awhile it's not very interesting. The stations used to play more Spanish language pop and rock and even salsa and merengue, but with the popularity of reggaeton in the past few years, those types of music have fallen by the wayside.

That said, my favorite artists from Spain include Jarabe de Palo, Ojos de Brujo, Rosario Flores, Alejandro Sanz, Niña Pastori, and Estrella Morente. My absolute favorite group from Spain is Ketama (I'm still sad they broke up frown ) and Antonio Carmona's solo album is pretty good. And, although they are super cheesy and just teenagers, my new "guilty pleasure" is Kimi-K . Some of them are related to the members of Ketama and other famous Spanish musicians. Click on the audio player on their web site to hear the entire album or see one video here on You Tube .

Lastly, thanks to MM board member El Rey for introducing me to Miguel Bose . I have downloaded a few of his songs and really enjoy them! thumbsup

My favourite spanish band is Fito y los Fitipaldis but my favourite song is "Entre dos aguas" of Paco De Lucía, one of the greatest spanish guitarists and whose niece is the singer Malú.

I recommend two rock bands called The Sunday Drivers and We Are Balboa that sing in english and I think nobody has mentioned Pastora and Ariel Rot.

Where is David Bisbal from??
He was being heavily publicised in Spain this time last year, so I assumed he was Spanish.
A friend of mine bought his CD in Argentina, thinking he was from there.

Saw a young singer opening for Crowded House in Barcelona the other day. His name was Ramon (sic). I don't know if he's well known, he went down very well with the (mainly British) Audience. Slightly folky sound, complimented CH.

Last time I was there Bebe was hugely popular with her first album - poppy but good with a serious edge to some of the lyrics. We heard it being played in a bar in Burgos and liked it so much we went out and bought it.

I really like Ojos de Brujo. They are pretty popular outside Spain as well, I first saw them on the Jools Holland show on the BBC. And I took a double bass class led by Danny Thompson a couple of years ago so I have to give a vote to Ketama too!
