I was at puerta del sol last night for new years eve. At around 10pm, there was a guy singing a song on a megaphone. If anyone else heard it, can you tell me what is the name of that song? I've heard it before but I don't remember the tune or the words to it at this point. I'm guessing it's a holiday song. Please help!

I think I've heard the song, but the bigger question is, had the man been drinking, and did he look anything like the maniac in this file photo? laugh

Seriously, though... The only Puerta del Sol song I know of (in my limited music exposure outside of the classical Spanish composers and a few Hombres G songs...) is "Un año más" by Mecano, which I think is a wonderful song.

I may be a sap at heart though, as it always hearkens me back to my first Nochevieja in Spain, in '88 in Bilbao. Every time I hear the song, I get a little misty-eyed as I long to join the throng in Sol celebrating the coming of "uno más" with all of the other marineros, soldados, solteros y casados...algún día...

Below are the lyrics for Mecano 's "Un Año Más" song. Is it the same which was sung at Puerta del Sol on New Year's Eve??

Un Año Más by Mecano

Marineros, soldados, solteros, casados
amantes, andantes

1, 2, 3 y 4 y empieza otra vez
que la quinta es la una
y la sexta es la dos
y así el siete es tres

Y decimos adiós
y pedimos a Dios
que en el año que viene
a ver si en vez de un millón
pueden ser dos

En la puerta del sol
como el año que fue
otra vez el champán
y las uvas y el alquitrán
de alfombra están

No, it was something else. I heard other people singing along, so it must be a well known song.

I think it was about fish drinking and drinking:
it went something like that:
y beben y beben y vuelven a beber
los peces en el rio...
Is that it? I kind of hummed along too as far as I could remember from my Spanish classes, I can ask my teacher tomorrow for the lyrics if you want! Let me know by e-mail. Anna

Lyrics to LOS PECES EN EL RÍO
(listen to the song in MIDI format HERE )

Beben y Beben y vuelven a Beber

Beben y Beben y vuelven a Beber

Beben y Beben y vuelven a Beber

Here's another version I found in About.com, which reminds me of the Gypsy King\'s version in their CD Tierra Gitana.
___________

Among the most popular Spanish carols is Los peces en el río, which draws a contrast between between the fishes in the river, who are excited about the birth of the baby Jesus, and the Virgin Mary, who goes about doing the chores of daily life. You'll find the song in most written and recorded collections of Spanish-language Christmas tunes.

The writer of the song is unknown, although the tune shows some Arabic influence.

The carol exists in a number of variations. Some include several more verses than the ones listed below, and some of them vary slightly in the words used. Lyrics of one popular version is shown below along with a fairly literal English translation. Note that, as is often the case in poetry and song lyrics, some of the norms of grammar and word order are applied loosely.

Los peces en el río
La Virgen se está peinando
entre cortina y cortina.
Los cabellos son de oro
y el peine de plata fina

ESTRIBILLO:
Pero mira cómo beben
los peces en el río.
Pero mira cómo beben
por ver a Dios nacido.
Beben y beben
y vuelven a beber.
Los peces en el río
por ver a Dios nacer.

La Virgen lava pañales
y los tiende en el romero,
los pajarillos cantando,
y el romero floreciendo.

ESTRIBILLO

La Virgen se está lavando
con un poco de jabón.
Se le han picado las manos,
manos de mi corazón.

ESTRIBILLO

(In English)

The Fishes in the River

The Virgin is combing her hair
between the curtains.
Her hairs are of gold
and the comb of fine silver.

CHORUS:
But look at how the fishes
in the river drink.
But look how they drink
in order to see God born.
They drink and they drink
and they return to drink,
the fishes in the river,
to see God being born.

The Virgin washes diapers
and hangs them on the rosemary,
the birdies singing
and the rosemary flowering.

CHORUS

The virgin is washing herself
with a little bit of soap.
Her hands have been irritated,
the hands of my heart.

CHORUS
