"We went into our trip whole hog, mapping out a 16-day itinerary. We initially considered covering more ground -- Barcelona was tempting, a friend beckoned us to southern France -- but we decided it would be wiser to stick not only to one country but also to just part of the country. After all, we could always go back.
A guidebook junkie, I consulted the travel guides on Spain in the public library, quizzed others who had recently visited and studied Web sites like
MadridMan.com (where I read other travelers' comments and even ran itinerary ideas by the Spain enthusiast from Ohio who hosts the site).
We decided to start off with a four-night stay in Madrid, making a day trip to Toledo, and then to loop through southern Spain, hitting Granada, the coast, the "white towns" of Andalucia's interior and Seville before returning to the capital."

Thanks for the beautifully written article, Stephanie. You were certainly "tested" on this trip, but it was obviously a wonderful experience to remember.
