I invite you all to list your favorite ten songs in Spanish here. I'd like this thread to be a great compendium of music. So without further ado, here is my rapidly composed list (in no particular order):
1. Donde pongo lo hallado - Silvio Rodriguez 2. Pequeña Serenata Diurna - Silvio Rodriguez 3. Cantares - Joan Manual Serrat 4. Contamíname - Victor Manuel y Ana Belen 5. Te doy una canción - Silvio Rodriguez 6. Si no lo veo, no me lo creo - Celtas Cortos 7. Planetas - Nauta 8. Papá cuéntame otra vez - Ismael Serrano 9. Canario - No me pises que llevo chanclas 10. La puerta de Alcalá - Victor Manuel y Ana Belen

Feel free to disagree, but here are some things I like: 1.) Anything by Mecano (so old, but so good) 2.) Me Gustas Tu - Manu Chau 3.) anything by La Oreja de Van Gogh 4.) Cunado Nadie Me Ve - Alejandro Sanz 5.) Me Ire - Alejandro Sanz
I also own a huge selection of music from the discotecas, which I wouldn't really call quality, but bring me back to many nights of dancing until 5 or 6 a.m.! I guess its just classic!

Grita - Jarabe de Palo 5. Olvidarte - Ricardo Arjona 6. Cuéntame al oído - Oreja de Van Gogh 7. A mi ritmo - Ella baila sola 8. Si no te hubieras ido - Marco Antonio Soliz 9. A puro dolor - Son by four 10. Cuando - Ricardo Arjona [ 12-06-2001: Message edited by: Tia ]

There are so many, it's too hard to choose!... Anyway, two questions; I guess by other previous posters' choices that they don't necessarily need to be songs from Spain, but sung in Spanish¿?. And do the Spanish version of foreign songs count?, 'cause I like for instance, one called 'Acuarela' originally, by a singer from Brazil. Right now I can only think of: -Mediterraneo, by J.M. Serrat (also Penelope, etc....) -Eres tu, by Mocedades (I believe it was even a hit in the US in the 70s!) -A cara o cruz, by Radio Futura (also Escuela de calor) -Corazon partio, By A. Sanz -El ramito de violetas, by Cecilia! -¿Como pudiste hacerme esto a mi? and Bailando, by Alaska -El dia que me quieras, Esta tarde vi llover, etc,...., by Los panchos and others(I had to throw in some classical 'boleros') Maybe some of you can check out a song by Mecano, sorry I don't know it's name, maybe El reloj de la Puerta del Sol, or something like that; the lyrics explain how New Year's eve is the one occasion when all 'españolitos' do the same thing at the same time, and it's true! Each year we perform the little "grape-ritual", etc, all at once(I don't know about Canarias, ha,ha!)which is quite amazing pim [ 12-12-2001: Message edited by: pim ]

Pim, the song is 'Un año más'. Tia P.S. Eres tú is one of my favourites, too!

Hello Esperanza, probably you won't know, but "Tú que puedes vuélvete" it's originally from Atahualpa Yupanqui, a great argentinian musician that died a few years ago. There are quite a few singers who have made versions of his songs, there is one really good version of these song by Mercedes Sosa. I think "la llorona" it's also a very famous Mexican song, I'm not sure if it was originally singed by Chavela Vargas or who was the original singer. I think we should also remember the all time most famous songs like Cielito lindo, la Cumparsita, Suspiros de España,....

I can't believe people haven't mentioned the following...maybe I'm a music geek in Spain for liking the following (hahha):
Piensa en Mi........Luz Soy Infeliz.......Lola Beltran Anything by.......... Paco de Lucia Solo se Vive una vez......Azucar Moreno (ok, so it's like 7 years old now!) Si tu no estas.......Rosana mi pequeno tesoro........Presuntos Implicados (funny story about that...I was mistaken once for the lead singer of this group while in the Palacio Gaviria, by the MANAGER and ended up being stared at ALL night and given ROYAL treatment!!LOL) tu tierra y mis semillas......Presuntos Implicados and last but not least, a whole bunch of stuff from Luis Mariano!!! And my hubby loves Revolver

A couple more....
-Aquellas pequeñas cosas by Juan Manuel Serrat (Manu Tenorio sung it last night at Operacion Triunfo, so I was reminded of it)
-Vida, by Rosana(Arbelo), sung by a girl named Kesia; it describes the birth of a baby from his/her point of view, if you're a female, it's almost guaranteed to make you cry.

When I was younger I liked heavy/hard music: Prisionero - Los ángeles del infierno Las flores del mal - Barón Rojo Pan de higo - Rosendo Noche de rock&roll - Barricada
Then I changed to more comercial music La luz se le apagó - Alejandro Sanz (the liric can make you cry). Élla - Alejandro Sanz Peor para el sol - Joaquín Sabina
Now, I prefer to hear caribean music (salsa, bachata, merengue) but I don't know the titles of the songs, just a few: La vida es un carnaval - ? A puro dolor - Son by four ? - Luis Miguel de Lamargue
Now there's a group called Estopa that is beating hardly through the young people and they have a couple of songs that are as hymns. Just guapetona has showed one of their songs (Tu perfume es el veneno). Why don't you like them?. Because you still haven't heard anything about them?. Because their lirycs are written with complicated slang?. Their music is a mixture of Rumba and rock and roll.

hombre_gizón: Man, I remember that Barricada stuff...that is going back a few years! You must've grown up in Euskadi since ALL the young folks were listening to Barricada there back in the late 80's.

You're right Calibasco!, I've grown up in Euskadi. I've seen Barricada in small village concerts when they weren't still famous eek: and on the stage they just wore ... "Un par de calcetines rotos, las botas negras sin limpiar ..." Bye.

I saw Barricada play in New York a few years ago. 1993? It was amazing! Can you believe LOS RODRIGUEZ played before them? Anyway, Ariel Rot was also incredible. Saludos para todos desde la Gran Manzana!

I like Barricada too. I recall "Problemas" and "Oveja Negra". About Estopa, they're really popular among young people, a great success from their beginning (2 years ago). But if you really want to listen to the most popular song in Spain: "Mi musica es tu voz" from Operacion Triunfo (not the best song ever, but terribly commercial)

Love this topic. We spent 13 years in Spain and 2 in Panama. We now live in Texas. How can anyone ignore Maria Dolores Pradera? Anything she sings is beautiful. I also remember with great fondness Carlos Cano and his habaneros. And the zarzuelas... Spanish is such a lovely language and has such a rich heritage in music, that it is impossible to choose. How can you rate a Carlos Gardel and his tangos against Pedro Infante singing ballads, or Chocolate with his canto jondo against Carlos Cano and his lovely habaneros? I love them all and listen to them all. Also as someone mentioned the Tex-Mex connection. Tish Hinojosa is terrific and so is Linda Ronstadt singing "Canciones de mi Padre". What a rich, varied legacy. Paloma San Basilio, Alfredo Kraus, Placido Domingo, Julio Iglesias, Lola Beltran, Javier Solis, Jorge Negrete, all wonderful talents in their own right. I could never choose my favorite 10.

There are so many, and so hard to choose, in my opinion. May I just add a few of my favorite groups?
In no particular order, La oreja de Van Gogh, Antonio Flores, OBK, Celtas Cortos(Nos vemos en los bares is one of my favorite cds)Rosana, Ella Baila Sola, Alejandro Sanz, and I love a group called Union Lirica that comes from Gran Canaria, and also a sort of new group called Soul Sonnet, also from the islands(both are kind of hip hop/ Rap groups.

OK some of mine are really sentimental and most are only sung in Spanish but not by Spaniards but hey I am from Tejas so what do you expect.
1. Contra La Corriente - Marc Anthony 2. Quiero - Jerry Rivera 3. Cuenta Conmigo - Jerry Rivera 4. Te Extraño - Luis Miguel 5. Suavemente - Elvis Crespo 6. Te Odio - Noelia 7. DLG - Lagrimas 8. Mana - de los pies a la cabeza 9. Hagamos el amor - Ricky Martin 10. La India - Que ganas de no verte nunca mas
I have found that when I am in Spain I hear a lot of Ricky Martin and Luis Miguel but apparently the locals haven't discovered Jerry Rivera yet. Great salsa/merengue!

WOW! What great songs! They really bring back memories! How about Nino Bravo and also some songs by Mana! Bittersweet, but so true especially when leaving spain until the next visit... "Al partir, un beso y una flor, una caricia y un adios.... es ligero el equipaje, para tan larga viaje, me voy pero te juro que manana volvere!"

nice! also, i love the barricada banter earlier on the thread... whatever happened to those guys? i saw them in '95 in Manzanares with 'Platero Y Tu', which must have been some time after they started to become famous. great show, but platero y tu was awful! (but they were better than the new star wars movie!! ) 1. cuatro rosas - gabinete caligari 2. enamorado de la moda juvenil - radio futura 3. entre arena y espuma - heroes del silencio 4. saca la lengua - los ronaldos 5. mercedes sosa 6. ibrahim ferrer 7. joaquin sabina 8. barricada i can only think of 8 and i know they are not all spanish, but you know... we like what we like! andrew :wq

Note that the age of these songs does not reflect *my* age. I love a lot of the Los Bravos and Los Salvajes stuff, along with Los Brincos, etc. Of course, I prefer music from the 60s in general, so here you go:
1. Los Chicos Con Las Chicas - Los Bravos 2. Las Ovejitas - Los Salvajes 3. Bugulu - Los Albas 4. Vive (or Viva, depending on if you look at the cover or the record) La Vida - Los Bravos 5. Amiga Mia - Los Brincos 6. Seis Dias - Bruno Lomas 7. Ven Conmigo - The Finders 8. Dame Tu Cariño - Los Bohemios 9. 98,6 - Los Angeles 10. They Call Me Mr. Tibbs - Chaquito Big Band (oops, this one is instrumental, but I totally love it!)
Plus many others!

My buddy, who owns the bar "La Zapateria" on c/ de la Victoria, always plays "Yo Me Bajo en Atocha" by Joaquin Sabina on the sound system during my last night on every trip.

What a great selection "that_girl"! Spanish 60's music is amazing: Sirex, Cheyenes, Iberos, Brincos, etc. It's like a parallel universe. It sounds like the Creation or the Kinks or the Beatles or the Stones...but NOT really. Highly recommended.

0oh hard one I'm gonna forget so much.. Well I'm not gonna make a top 10 from Alejandro Sanz (I could easily do it though).. but my favourite songs that are yet unmentioned are 01 Y si fuera ella... in download programs also available with David Bisbal.. 02 Lo ves... sorry have to give another song from him but this was the first one I heard from him and I love it... 03 No me conoces... Marc Anthony... I think he's great.. but anyway I'm not really much into salsa but this is definitely one of my favourites... also here I'm skipping LOTS OK here comes Operacion Triunfo fan... watch out the next ones... 04 Digale.. by David Bisbal, beautiful song and it has a special meaning for me.. 05 Sin miedo a nada.. by Alex Ubago.. or Beth and Joan Tena.. just not with Amaia Monteiro.. can't believe no one mentioned it before 06 14 de Febrero.. Alex y Vega.. whether it's original from them or not, this song could bring me to tears.. 07 Siempre fuiste mio.. Monica Naranjo.. a few years ago I had TVE int. (now they took it away ) and I saw her performing a song god no idea what it was.. anyway was in Spain some week ago and found the cd with it.. it turned out there was a much better song on it.. but it might be italian original.. if it is, please tell me the title and who sings it.. ok 3 more to go.. 08 Volver amar.. Cristian Castro.. truly a beautiful song.. would be a long story to tell so I won't bother you again with it.. but I love it and again I could make a top 10 with songs from him 09 Sin ti no soy nada.. Amaral.. I don't know.. just something in this song touches me.. in some way I think it is logical.. can't explain but I love it.. 10 Amiga Soledad.. Miguel Nandez.. ok again I return to operacion triunfo.. I love that program and also this singer LOL I bought a t-shirt from him.. I think he has a great voice and this is such a beautiful song.. can't believe it's not on the album.. Well think this post is long enough for a first post.. loved this topic byebye Desirée by the way.. songs in no particular order!!

Muchas gracias a todos ustedes - I was unaware of the music that you like so much. I´ll check them out the next time I´m in the international section of the mall music stores.
My collection (if you could call it that) of Spanish-language music is quite limited, but these are my favorites.
First, Con Los Años Que Me Quedan, Mi Tierra, aw, heck, almost everything on the Mi Tierra CD - Gloria Estefan. Yes, it´s more Cuban than Spanish, but I sang Con los años to my wife when she first visited me in Pittsburgh as we went to Mount Washington one evening, and she cried. Yeah, I sing bad, but not that bad! Actually, it made her happy.
My second favorite is almost everything on Abriendas Puertas by Gloria - again, more Latin American than Spanish, but I enjoy it anyway.
There are a few songs on Arrasando from Thalia that I really like, especially Rosalinda. It´s the theme to a telenovela - and maybe considered cheesy but I like it anyway.
Mi esposa broght a lot of Colombian music with her when she came last year but she prefers American country!

Actually a lot of Spanish 60s songs are covers of British or American songs, but some are done much better than the original. My friend who usually does a dj session at the Siroco in Madrid for Operación Bikini every year gave me two cd compilations of Spanish ye-ye (made for Operación Bikini 2003), very funny stuff mostly about summer holidays in Mallorca or Benidorm. He explained to me the funny story of "Estoy de Rodriguez", right before his friend texted him with literally "Estoy de Rodriguez, wanna go out?". Anyway, there are some truly fun songs on the cds.

Also I do not understand spanish. Perhaps there is somebody here, who can help me to find a spanish company who is selling this soundtrack. I thank you very much for every answer!!! Yours nico

Hi Nico, most (all?) songs in the soundtrack were by LOS CHUNGUITOS, the great Rumberos from Badajoz, Lots of compilations are available on AMAZON o la FNAC. Just make sure the following songs are included: "Ay! Que Dolor","Me Quedo Contigo". Hope this helps.

I don't speak any Spanish but have been to Madrid a few times. The only music that really jumped out at n=me was Celtas Cortos (something like that). The music is a killer blend of rock and Celtic. Not sure what the lyrics are like, but I like this band a lot.

Well, there is one name I'm surprised not to see: Nino Bravo...anything he sings...maybe many haven't heard of him since he died at a young age in 1973...but what a voice.
I prefer the voice of Julio Iglesias to his son...especially the song "flor de piel" (I'm pretty sure that's the title).

First of all, THANK YOU to those who put Soda Stereo and Silvio Rodriguez in your lists!!! So cool!!!! To those who posted, I would have to add Ojala for Silvio Rodriguez, and Te para tres for Soda Stereo. Ok, this is impossible to make a list of only 10 songs, and of all genres in Spanish language music, but here goes (in no order AT ALL)...
10. Ojala que llueva cafe - Juan Luis Guerra 9. He sido tan feliz contigo - Alejandro Sanz 8. Me cuesta tanto olvidarte - Mecano 7. La gota fria - Carlos Vives 6. Mi tierra - Gloria Estefan 5. Puedes contar conmigo - La oreja de Van Gogh 4. Me falta el aliento - Estopa 3. Ojos asi - Shakira 2. La bomba - Ricky Martin (Come on, tell me you haven't danced to that SOMEWHERE in some little hole in the wall bar in Spain anywhere! Lol) 1. El album - Aterciopelados
This was too hard to do, I just picked some songs that came to mind...my music collection is so eclectic you would think I was a crackhead (Everything from Frank Sinatra to Tribalistas from Brazil to Zero Assoluto from Italy). I was a recording industry major, what do you expect? Lol.... Anyway, this was fun!!! Can't wait to see other posts....

VannieNY - The song you are thinking of with Nek and Laura Pausini is Tan Solo Tu (Sei solo tu in Italian) I LOVE that song, I think it's that one unless there's another one I don't know about that got that popular. I thought Nek was from Spain until recently when I started stuying Italian, LOL...he was so popular there and had the accent.
Also, Joe - I think you mentioned a lot about Gloria Estefan, she is MY FAVORITE and I totally agree with you on those CDs - Abriendo Puertas and Mi Tierra are my faves from her yet (even over Alma Caribena, although that CD brings good memories because it came out the year I was in Spain). No me dejes de querer is the bomb. But so is everything she does. I got the great fortune of finally seeing my idol last year in Houston...it was amazing.
Oh, and I'm an idiot for not putting at least one song by Mana. For gosh's sake I have Mana plastered in my windshield above my rear view mirror! Scary, I know. Anyway, I think my fave song by them would have to be En el muelle de San Blas, but the live version. I acutally wore out their two disc live CD set, so I had to buy another one. Yes, that's sad.
Anyway, I love talking about music waaay too much, I should have never ventured here! Now I won't shut up!
Hehe...talk to ya'll later.

Majesty318 -
LOLOLOL!!! I almost totally forgot about Tam Tam Go!!!! That song was the bomb when I was in Madrid. I need to download it now to listen to it again. And I love Para no verte mas - La Mosca is so cool. And, Carlos Vives - what can you say, you gotta dance. I first heard Fruta Fresca for the first time five years ago in some small bar somewhere in Madrid - my host dad gave me his CD for my birthday.....*Sigh* Memories.
Music is so awesome in so many ways.
