I'm looking for suggestions for new or up and coming Spanish or Latin American writers. I thought that since everyone on the MM board seems to be so knowledgable about other facets of Spanish life, you might be able to direct me to Spanish popular fiction. I've just recently finished two books by Ana Castillo, and gone through the works of Rosario Ferre. Written in Spanish or translated to English are both fine (although I'm MUCH slower to finish books written in Spanish as it is not my first language). TIA jmcarr

My Latin American favourite is Isabel Allende (Paula, La casa de los espíritus, Cuentos de Eva Luna). She´s not new, but always of current interest. Tia (nice name, isn´t it ) [ 12-05-2001: Message edited by: Tia ]

Julia Alvarez of the Dominican Republic. "In the Time of the Butterflies" and "How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents." I heard that "Butterflies" was on HBO, I believe. I'd love to see it. Did anyone tape it?

My all time favorite Spanish writer is Juan Goytisola...But his books are very difficult to find in English. And since we're on the topic...Are there any Spaniards out there who can offer up their opinions of this writer??? I'd love to know what you think!

I suggest to try the writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, he won the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1982, his most popular book is "100 años de soledad" (A hundred years of solitude), when I read that book I felt very into the story, I was thinking that he was talking about me, my family, my town. He is Colombian, I am Peruvian, but the way how he writes shows the latin american idiosyncracy. there is a web site of Peruvian Literature http://www.ciberayllu.org Rafael. another writers, the peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa, the argentinian Borges.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I'm going to do a little research online and then create a reading list for myself I've already read most of Garcia Marquez and a little of Garcia Lorca, which I enjoyed very much.
