My mother's side hails from Villagarcia de Arosa in Pontevedra. It was/is a rustic fishing village in the northwest. The first time I went there to see my relatives was in 1981, and they had just finished installing indoor plumbing.
I ate pounds and pounds of seafood, and the people from the area were so hospitiable, it made me proud to be Gallego.
I love my heritage from this country. I wish we had some kind of association locally to be a part of.

Hola Memo11, I don't think there is a local association for Buffalo, but there are associations in NY City and N.J.

I spent a couple of nights in VilaGarcia de Arousa in July, 2004, on my way to Santiago de Compostela for 25 jul. I needed a stopping place to get over my jetlag, having flown Newark - Madrid and Madrid - Santiago and bussed (on Castromil) Santiago - VilaGarcia. cool

Yes, the food was great! And the people were quite friendly, considering the fact that I don't speak Galego (only Castellano and a few words like obrigado). eek

Nice place! I would love to go back again, when I can stay longer. rolleyes

Funny, I don't speak Gallego either. For some reason my family taught me Castilian, so when i was there I didn't understand them.

The first time I went to Compostela, my jaw dropped to the ground. Absolutely magnificent building.
