DEMONSTRATION FOR THE RIGHT TO HAVE A ROOF
STOP SPECULATION NOW!
The date is next Sunday, 23rd January 2005, at 11 o'clock in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. Then we shall again have the opportunity to express our discontent with ground speculation, the lack of state housing and the indifference of the different governments, which has given rise to the unacceptable rise in the price of houses and flats and to generally unacceptable situations.
Under the title "FOR THE RIGHT TO A ROOF - STOP SPECULATION" this demonstration has been convened by various groups in which thousands of people are involved: the Regional Federation of the Residents' Associations of Madrid (FRAVM), the associations which represent the thousands of residents affected by the delays and overpricing of the new urban developments like the PAU (Urban Action Plan) in Vallecas, the PAU in Carabanchel, the PAU in Montecarmelo, the PAU in Parla de Parla Este, etc., the resident's associations of the new south-western areas (Los Ahijones, Berrocales, Cañaverales and Los Cerros), the Coordinator for the Cooperatives for First-time Buyers, the Platform for Adequate Housing in Madrid, the Young FRAVM Commission, the Zarzaquemada Association from Leganés, and other social and residents' groups.
This demonstr-action will demonstrate against the various actions being revindicated on the 23rd JANUARY, AT 11O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING IN THE PUERTA DEL SOL IN MADRID. For an end to the delays in the PAU, real agreement for protected state housing, fraud control, and the right to decent housing at a decent cost will be some of the subjects covered.
Politicians can, but they have to want to. When it comes to housing, the people in power still err on the side of speculators, agencies, building companies and the owners of large ground areas. Let's make them favour our side of the equation. On the side of article 47 of the Constitution. On the side of housing for what it is: a prime necessity and not goods for trading. We have been encouraged by what has been achieved as a result of some of the actions carried out during 2004. However, what has been achieved in certain areas should be extended to all other groups, and the housing problem comes from general sources which politicians can and must change. The housing market is strongly handled to favour those who understand housing as a business opportunity, and not those who simply wish to live there. The few measures carried out by the Ministry, the Community of Madrid and the City Council are primarily aimed at the media and do not give real solutions. If we don't do anything, funding problems will remain, and your dream of a decent home at a decent cost will be further and further away. However, if social pressure increases, the people in power will have to come to our side. To the side of the vast majority.
When economic interests tie the hands of politicians, this is the moment when our role is most important. For this reason, your presence will be felt. Now there are thousands of us, but there need to be many more, and, especially, WE MUST BE SEEN TOGETHER.
So we invite you , all of you, to participate in this common protest to demand reforms which will make housing what it is, a prime necessity, so that we can all see our right to decent housing achieved.
