Hi!

I am getting married in May 2008. If someone else has any advice on the process an American marrying a Spanish citizen, it would be sooooo helpful! Also, does anyone know if non-royals can hold a religious ceremony at the Almudena Cathedral? It is my dream location.

Hello Kathryn86,

The Catedral de la Almudena is not only for royals. In fact Prince Felipe was the only royal who married there.
This is because the Madrid Cathedral is really new. The construction started in June the 14th of 1881. Due to economical problems and later the Spanish Civil War the works didn't finish until 1993 whe the temple was consecrated by Pope Jhon Paul II. So it can be considered as the newest Spanish cathedral.

This is difficult: you should visit the Pastor of the Cathedral as soon as possible to find out what kind of documentation you will need to present in order to schedule a Catholic wedding ceremony. It's not something you can accomplish in a day or two.

This will probably include sworn statements from Spanish witnesses attesting to your identity and that you are not now nor have ever been married.

Good luck!

Thanks! Yea We have already started the paper work. We were engaged on July 6. and made a visit the the consulate in Miami wednesday! There are a TON of documents. Our advice was don't start later than 6 months before the wedding. It looks like I'm going to have to miss a few weeks of school throughout the semester to go meet with the Bishopric. frown
