The Iberians were first ones on the peninsula supposively. They then intermixed with celts from France creating Celt-Iberian race the Romans came and intermixed. Phonecians and Greeks also had influence. I heard that the Moorocans while they did bring great culture advances did not entertwine heavily with the people and thus did not influence the Spanish ethnicity as heavily and also as they were expelled from the country later by queen Isabel. So my question is what ethnicities in Spain or most notably interchanged in the gene pool. Are we European or some sort of mediterenean composite.

Im also interested in the Iberian culture and its modern effects on Spanish culture. http://indoeuro.bizland.com/archive/article8.html this site is fairly informative about the Iberians. Any how im trying to figure what are place is in the European stage.

Hi Quintos,
I'v always thought that if you took the Latin
out of Spanish, you would mostly be left with
Phoenician. The phoenicians settled colonies
on the south coast of Spain a couple of cent-
uries B.C., so Phoenician was the first written
language in the region. The Carthaginians,
who came later, also used Phoenician. The
first written language is a huge technological
breakthrough so it tends to replace the unwritten and hieroglyphic languages of an
area.

hey everybody

referring to races spaniards are a mixture of nordic and mediterranean races.we all have suebi, visigothic, vandal(where in fact andalusia's name originated)
we also have iberian, roman, phoenician, greek, jewish, and finally moorish blood flowing through our spanish veins.
there are of course some exceptions though.
some of us are blond or redhead and of pure celtic blood(galicia, asturias, cantabria),and some of us ,well the andaluzes have more jewish and moorish blood than the rest of the spanish.

moreover the REAL basques are of pure IBERIAN ORIGIN.

Spanish race to this day is some what homogenous. Alot make the over generaltion that simply because Spaniard is darker in appearance it emdetiatly implies that he is of Moorish origin. The truth of the matter is that in North Spain it is much colder there fore the people through the years have developed light skin etc. While down south as we all know it is hotter and much sunnier naturally people will have darker aspects. But not always. Spanish are a mix of Iberian,Celtic Visigoth Roman Phonecian, Greek , and Carthagian. We are mixed together of this. The Moorish invasion al though it lasted for 700 yrs. some mixing did occure but no to the level which some people think. The over romanticed view of the Andulacians as Moorish people in Spain is simple incorrect their was alot of Spanish immagration their from Castilla and other places. In conclusion we all have a common fore fathers those people which I mentioned above. Which are all mediterenean whites. Basically we are a Mediterenean people lets remember also that the Moors are considered a caucasian race and many of em actually have light skin. When the Moors invaded they did bring some blacks but few Spanish people look of Black origin. So in conclusion we are a mediterenean European race. fmike the man their is no proof of Basque being related to Iberians their langauge has not been linked to conclude that Basques are Iberian is untrue. Most likely Basques migrated from the North in pre historic times. Basque does not = Iberian Basque=Basque. Also the celtic origins in the North are probably stronger not to the say that all of Spain does not have celtic heritage. Andalucia needs to remember that is has more that their region has more then just Gypsies and Moors. This is taken from http://www.webpersonal.net/jrr/ib8b_en.htm "But the problem is: what happens with those Aquitanian words clearly interpretable by the Basque language? There is no Iberian equivalence for CISON, ANDERE or NESCA. Only the Iberian base s'an(i) may be related with SENI and SEMBE (this probably from *'sen-be'). Also worth noting is Gorrochategui's remark that whereas those Aquitanian words that resemble to Basque adjectives (such as ILLUN 'ilun' "dark" and BERRI 'berri' "new") do are attested in adjective position (that is, as second member of compund), the presumed Iberian "equivalents" iltun and ber'(i) don't observe that rule!!. So, although the data on Aquitanian language resemble that on Iberian, probably they are not closely related. Aquitanian is Old Basque, but Aquitanian is not Iberian; they are two different languages."

Quintos, Are you referring to being tanned? Because skin color is a genetic trait not a geographic trait. The reason folks in Asturias and Galicia are lighter skinned was because of the many invasions by Celts, Scandinavians, Vandals, Suevis, Goths, and Visigoths.

It is true that intense sunlight in tropical latitudes has selected genes for darker skin color as a protection from intense ultraviolet radiation. But Andalucia is not in the "tropical latitudes." If geography was a determinant how would you explain the light skinned North African Berbers?

I actually saw a graph of the darkness of skin in a National Geographic in ocurdance with sun conditions of the world. And sure enough on the Iberian peninsula it is white to darker white in the south.
Obviously it is not geneticaly inscribed since both Andulucians and Cantabarians have some similar heritage. Not every thing about Andulucia is Gypsie or Moorish thats the point im trying to get at.

I want to show you how the Moors looked like:

Paintings of the Moors....(painted on the XIII century in Spain):

http://www.angelfire.com/md/8/moors.html

As you can see they were white. The Northafricans of today are heavily mixed, so they are not white. 1200 years ago, when they came into Spain they were different, most were totally white (berbers).

-Genetical study that shows that the genetic influence of the moors in Spain despite their presence of 8 centuries was minimal, almost inexistent (so those that say that there is an important influence of the moors in the genetic pool of the Spaniards are completely wrong. 93% of Spaniards have 0% of northafrican blood. Can the French say the same now?):
