I was once that girl. I am an American and at 16 I spent a year as an exchange student in Venezuela.
I did many things that may have seemed strange or rude, especially when I first arrived. Privacy is a big issue for Americans. Constantly talking about money, well, that's a personal defect. I butt heads with my host family members several times for privacy and other issues.
But I was also fascinated with the country, went out of my way to learn the language, and eventually adjusted. Luckily my host family was patient. That was 10 years ago. We have been extremely close ever since them. My host mother calls me her "hija gringa," and I will be visiting them for the fifth time next month.
The situation is not easy for anyone, especially for her. Be patient.
