One thing I've noticed (and much to my chagrin) on my travels and livings in Spain: Sarcasm is almost completely lost on Spaniards as a whole. There are a select few who "get it", but for the most part, you're better off with slapstick or a clever prank if you're in need of a laugh.

Funny... that's what the British say about Americans.

Kelly,
One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be a lot of silly jokes centered on Gallegos. they usualy begin: " Two gallegos..."
laugh
I don't know why? Does anyone?

Hey Cali, I don't know if you're now being sarcastic wink , I have seen by your posts that you're very sarcastic but I must admit that until I have read you a little bit more it's difficult to get you, I think that when you don't know someone many times you can't know if he's joking or not.
Yes, many of gallegos, vascos, catalanes ...all about the stereotypes of each region, but the place where more jokes talk about is Lepe smile

They're like Polack jokes or Pat 'n Mike jokes ... they're basically ethnic slurs.

How about beginning with : "un Tio" or "ese Tio"?

Somewhere around here I have a CD (from Madrid); it's called 'Chistes' and contains every kind of joke imaginable. One that I recall is a 'play' on a Radio/TV commercial - the 'punchline' is: "madre, solo hay una."
I won't mention the subject - it might spoil the joke for you.

Good point, Miguelito...sarcasm is an "acquired taste", and you do need to know someone at least more than on a cursory level... My observation includes both my good friends and those who are just acquaintances, and it is a major generalization.

On the Lepe jokes, that's all I heard in Spain. The gallego jokes are told more broadly in Argentina...and the end result is the same: Leperos and gallegos are "bruto" and "torpe".

Cali,
I have heard the Gallego jokes here and in Spanish periodicals. I know the Galleguitos got around. But why pick on them?

What is this about Lepe? I have not heard any of these jokes. What is a Lepe?

As in, "Un tío cruzaba una calle en Santiago de Compostela, cuando..."?
