¡Hola a todos!

As a Spaniard, I am very much interested in knowing what you like the most from Spain.

Have you liked the buildings, the people, the food? For me, it´s the most beautiful country in the world, and I am really proud of being Spanish, but I would like to know what have you liked the most during your stay in Spain.

¡Gracias!

For me the best part of Spain is the Spain part. Basically that it's Spain, and that when I get off the plane, I'm in Spain. That's what I like most about Spain. laugh laugh laugh

A question which I often get but can seldom answer. I've lived here for 13 years so one thing I like is that it's now home, and all my friends are here. It comes down to people. But of course that sort of answer applies to everyone everywhere. What's unique about Spain? The laid-back attitude, which as an Irishman I can identify with. The outgoing nature of the people is an attraction too. The Madrid weather. But there are things I miss about other countries too and other people's cultures and attitudes, and what I really like about Spain is the strange mix of people who I know here, Spanish – and foreigners who've come here and fallen in love with the country too. In fact sometimes the foreigners here are more "Spanish" than the Spanish themselves! So, basically I like my lifestyle here, which is one that is not available in other countries. I am talking about Madrid, where I can afford to live in the centre. PS How about a whimsical non-offensive thread on What I Hate About Spain?!!!

What a great question. Let´s see if I can put it into words.
First and foremost, I love the people, their warm and welcoming personality, and their strong family values. I also love how interested they are in my American life. Loved one Sevillano so much that I married him.

I also love the rich historical culture and the great lengths Spaniards take to preserve that, while still opening themselves up to just the right amount of technology.

I love the weather in Andalucía and everything about the lifestyle--work to live, not live to work like here in the US!

That ABOUT sums it up but I could list hundreds of reasons.

Saludos!

When I arrive in Madrid, I usually proceed directly (on Bus # M-101) to the Plaza in Barajas pueblo and have Churros con chocolate at Toribio's Churreria. That signals the start of my gastronomic excursion to whichever region of Spain wherein my destination lies. rolleyes

I love the food and the wines! cool

Carmen,
¡Qué pregunta! What do I love about Spain. Everything, in a nutshell. Everything. It represents where my family comes from...who I am...When I am in Spain, I feel "at home"

I love the sounds , the smells, the tastes, the sights, etc. Spain IS different, that is why it is so Special. Sitting at a cafe, going for tapas from bar to bar, seeing a play, roaming the streets of Madrid, hearing CASTELLANO the way I love to hear it spoken...hearing GALLEGO the way my grandparents spoke it...I could go on and on...I ADORE Spain and all things Spanish...at times I have been told( by my two daughters) that I am obsessed rolleyes . I can't help it though. It is who I am, and what I love most about the world. smile

Hey people, I think you're straying off the original question: "What do you like most about Spain. That only allows for one answer. C'mon people, let's stick to the original question...geez! :p What next, complete anarchy?

Hola Carmen,
What a difficult question! Ay!!!
Well, when I was nineteen and I first visited Spain, I would readily have said the Españoles, they are so guapo!

Now, that a few Spring showers have passed, I would say the thing I like most about Spain, is that there are many things that I like about Spain. I like the people, very amiable and polite. I like the variety of foods! Of course I grew up on Spanish food, but there's nothing quite like Churros con chocolate on a brisk morning in Madrid! I like the fact that every town whether small or big has a Plaza Mayor where you can sit and have a café, or a cañita, and listening to music carried on the wind. I like the fact that everywhere you go there is a Libreria run by someone that looks like a character from a Blasco Ibañez novel (i.e. La Loca de La Casa). I like the fact that Spain is composed of regions so diverse from each other that you wonder if you have crossed the border. I like cities like Segovia that takes you from Roman times to Medieval times to Modern times in a matter of a one hour walk! Enfín, I like everything about Spain.
Saludos,
Carmen de la Florida! wink

I am with CaliBasco--what I like best about Spain is Spain.

But if I had to choose, it would be a tie between two things (yes, I am cheating by sneaking in more than one!):

1) The feeling I get when I look out of the window of the plane and see Spain below me and know that I am "home" (I've never technically lived in Spain, and my family is not Spanish, but it's home anyway, in some indescribable way). I usually cry and feel so excited I can hardly stand it.

2) Sitting in Mesón de Cervantes, at a window seat (they are really little wooden benches), eating a toasted cheese sandwich and drinking a sangría while looking out at the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca.

The first time I was in Spain some Spanish friends and I were sitting by the beach in the north, sipping our coffee, when we found ourselves amused with the animated men arguing with each other next to us. Immediately, one in our party leaned in and told me the Spanish would even argue about when the damn bus was coming. We all laughed, sipped more of our coffee, and headed home.

I mention this anecdote because I think it speaks volumes about Spanish culture. To me, an American, my many times in Spain have made me realize how much I respect the Spanish zest for life. It can be one AM in the morning and you'll still find older couples out walking in the streets, mothers with their babies, and teens out to party. This spirit of community is intoxicating, and something I think any Spaniard should be proud of.

Recently when I was in Madrid, and expected this sense of community to be less visible, I was reminded of the Spanish culture I found while in the north. Although less visible, Madrid still provided the same richness. It reminded me, again, why I choose to vacation and visit friends in España.

ooooo, I like this thread! There are a couple of things I like about spain. Firsly, I have to say the healthy diet. And the FOOD??? mmmm, where do I start, tortilla, patatas alioli, paella....it's all good, as far as I'm concerened, and because of all the oil used, my excema almost completely cleared up.
The second thing is the countryside. I went to El Escorial for the day, and although it was blinkin cold eek , the air was so fresh and a pleasure to breathe.mmmmmmmmm........
oh, and the language is lovely to speak too. ALthough I only speak a little, everyone was really helpful and encouraged me without making me feel silly!

Well for me, coming from Scotland, the thought of waking up every day to sunshine and blue skies was a big incentive to visit Spain. Then, I picked up a phrase book and set about trying to learn the language. Every time I visit Spain I learn a little bit more about the country and its history and its people. I love the way Spanish cities are still human places, the food, the nightlife, the weather, patatas bravas, Pan BIMBO and how varied the landscape is from Galicia to Andalucia.
I suppose it's all so different from everything I've ever known but it's also accessible and if you're an adaptable type, you can fit in pretty well.

How can anyone forget the big black bull billboards along the highways!!! Those things looked kind of trippy when I took a road trip through the country last year!

I love the people of Spain. I love my two wonderful friends in Galicia, Vero and Leo, and the way they have a moment for me when people who live 15 minutes away don't. I love the bars along the beaches of Nigran and Baiona, I love spending hours going between the cafes in Santiago. I love the way the ocean curls up to the mountains along the Galician coast and rolls back out in a stunning array of blue and green that doesn't happen on my side of the Atlantic.

I love the beauty of Barcelona and the feeling that I'm in an enchanted city as I walk through the narrow streets and come upon an antique building with a pastel roof. I can't describe the feeling of being on top of the world as I look down from Tibidabo and see a view of Catalunya that catches my breath in my throat.

I love Sevilla and treasure every memory I have of sitting in La Plaza de Espana reading Cernuda and feeding the ducks during la comida. I love walking through the callecitas and getting lost for hours and not being the slightest bit afraid.

I love Ronda and the breathtaking bridges that seem to have no end to their depth. Just sitting along a path reading or writing... feeling nothing but peace because really, what else do you need?

God... there are so many things... I miss the flamenco, I miss walking in at 8 AM and being asked if I slept well when really I was just coming in from La Feria de Abril... I miss walking down the street at 3 AM with my friends singing "Mi Musica Es Tu Voz" and having strangers on the street join in... I miss the food, the atmosphere, the feeling of family, the values families hold, the pride, the sense of community, the love of nature, the respect of the past and ones home.... I miss my wonderful friends in Sevilla, Madrid, Santiago, Vigo, Nigran, Lloret de Mar, Barcelona, Santander, San Vicente de la Barquera... I love Castillian Spanish and my ears perk up when I hear it. I love Gallego and Catalan and picking up words as I listen to it spoken on the street. I love the feeling that every day I'm learning something, be it a new language like Gallego or just a new word in Spanish.

For me Spain is an experience I can't really describe or put into coherent words. It's a series of images of beauty and culture that I've arranged in my mind. I can't choose one thing I love most. I love it all.

Oh my god I cannot wait until the 19th... I have to get back now!!!

Melinda
