I've read once or twice that the Galician language has roots with the Gaelic languages (i.e. as spoken in Ireland). Any feedback on this?

It is true. Irish gaelic, welsh, scotish gaelic, galician and portuguese share the same celtic roots, though galician and portuguese are dialects from a common language, and that from lathyn. I'm not sure about the others.
As far as I know, it is impossible for a galician to understand an irish/welsh/scottish.

So the music and the name of the language is not a coincidence? There is an actual link between Irish people and people from Galicia, right? I have a sister that (unlike me ) looks more Irish than Mexican, meaning white, reddish hair and freckles; and the only European connection we have in the family is with Galicia, can that be the answer or there's not a distinctive Galician look?

They have much in common. Spain, and specially Galicia, was colonized by celts, as well as the British Isles and part of France. You may easily find bagpipers in Galicia and Asturias too. Reddish hair is not very common, but I must say that galicians are almost as white as irish, and blue eyes are very common Fernando

Fernando, While we do share celtic cultural roots with the Irish and Scots, the gaelic that the Irish and Scottish speak is linguistically different from the Galego or Astur. Galician is a romance language that is part of the iberoromance family of languages. I love Galicia!

I think you are right Probably they have some influence on one another, but galician and portuguese are dialects from lathyn while I'm not sure that happens with irish, scottish and gaelic. Perhaps someone can enlighten us a little more... Fernando

Gallego is the mother tongue and Portuguese is a dialect of Gallego. This is not intuitive but check out the web site. http://www.sispain.org/english/language/language/galician.html

I would say it is more correct to say that both modern galician and portuguese are dialects from the ancient galician...
