To the great delight of my Scottish husband, who can roll his Rs like no-one's business, I can't do it. Any attempt sounds as if I'm attempting a Daffy Duck impression and scares the cats. How do you do it? HELP!!!!!

It takes practice. I remember I used to sing the song Reet Petite by Jackie Wilson to train my tongue. Also, don't try too hard. Just let your tongue hang loose and let it flap, or something like that. I know I'm not explaining myself very well. You'll get the knack eventually. I think

can you say ferrocarril? My spanish teacher made the class practice that word almost daily for a week... I was quite surprised on a recent trip back to the states to hear my niece´s ever growing spanish speaking ability. She has a latina teacher in her nursery school who is teaching her. My niece can even roll her r´s !!

This topic's been done before, and I'll add in here what I submitted before: I took six years of HS Spanish, but it wasn't until I'd lived in Spain for a year before I was able to do it...here are some helps that have helped others, though.
To loosen your tongue and get it in position, try repeating (multiple times) words in English like "butter" and "ladder", as the middle double consonant is similar to where your tongue needs to be for the "rr". The most important thing to remember is to not try too hard, as this will make your tongue tense, and you'll never get it.
Try some Riojano or a couple of Mahous, and maybe that will "loosen la lengua"....

I posted this elsewhere, but the thing to do is to say "pot of tea" over and over again, quickly. After a while, your tongue will learn the rolling naturally--and it will start coming out as "para ti." It's not a long, sustained "rrrrrr," but it's a start on training your tongue to go to the right place in your mouth! Tara
