¡Ya! ALT + 173 works just fine on my keyboard too. I always use 4-digit codes for the question (0191) and exclamation (0161) marks "upside down". El Boqueron, it´s not that hard to remember and maybe that´s the best way to keep my languid brain bright and cheery. Tia wink

El Boqueron, you've answered my question, I believe you were the one I referred to earlier that helped me with the accents on that historical thread that was tragically
but accidentally ripped out! laugh

I thought I was going crazy because I searched and searched and could not find the thread! Oh well, all's well that ends well!

Thanks, everyone. I, too, try to keep my brain in motion by attempting to remember the numbers used with the Alt key.

Now, someone answer this, please. I e-mailed an adult friend who is studying Spanish at a local community college and told her that she could be "oh so cool" if she used the accented letters in her e-mail. So, I sent her the info (except the é and ¡, of course, because I didn't know them at the time!!). She e-mailed me back with some gobbledy gook that was totally incomprehensible. What happened? (If you'd like, I may be able to copy and paste her results here.)

Okay... Since I'm the lame brain who deleted that VERY useful previous thread, it's only fair that I re-list the ALT+ keys for the accented Spanish letters and characters. Here you go....

With the NUM LOCK key in the ON position on your PC's side keypad, push and hold the ALT key AND THEN the 3 digits in sequence to make the following characters/accented letters:

ALT+130 = é
ALT+144 = É (listed above by CaliBasco)
ALT+160 = á
ALT+161 = í
ALT+162 = ó
ALT+163 = ú
ALT+164 = ñ
ALT+165 = Ñ
ALT+166 = ª (as in the abbreviated "Mª" for María)
ALT+167 = º (degrees, also for piso number & word "número" as "Nº")
ALT+168 = ¿
ALT+173 = ¡ (upside down exclamation point)

And... What about the capital accented "A" as in "Angel" and other capital accented letters not listed above?? And the double-dotted "u" as in "Arguelles"?

Again, sorry for the inadvertant DELETION. Ugh. rolleyes

THIS JUST ADDED:

Using Tia's 4-digit method, as listed at About.com (thanks to PacoM above):

á Alt + 0225
Á Alt + 0193
é Alt + 0233
É Alt + 0201
í Alt + 0237
Í Alt + 0205
ñ Alt + 0241
Ñ Alt + 0209
ó Alt + 0243
Ó Alt + 0211
ú Alt + 0250
Ú Alt + 0218
ü Alt + 0252
Ü Alt + 0220
¿ Alt + 0191
¡ Alt + 0161
« Alt + 0171
» Alt + 0187

Saludos, MadridMan

For the double-dotted u there is a key at least on my keyboard and I just press it at first and the letter u. In the same way I write all the capital letters with the accent: at first the key with the accent and then any capital letter with the SHIFT-key as usual. Tia smile
