Im actually a dual citizen, I carry a spanish passport... and I decided to live in Madrid. My spanish is not great at all.

All naturalized Spaniards I know got their DNI prior to their passport. It is the first paperwork they have to do once they pledge allegiance to the Constitution. Actually, to get a passport you must bring you DNI with you...

I am in a similar situation, though I have yet to get my Spanish passport.

If I remember correctly, you cannot get your DNI without being resident in Spain. Contact your Spanish consulate.
