This evening, April 3, Spanish police closed in on a group of suspected Islamic terrorists in an apartment in Leganes in southern Madrid. When the suspected terrorists became aware of the police, they were reported to have shouted and sang in Arabic, and then set their apartment on fire, in the process setting off some explosives stored there. The entire facade of the apartment building was sheared off by the explosions and fire. At least three suspects are believed to have died. One Spanish police officer is dead, and eleven wounded. The suspects were believed to have been connected with the 11-M bombings.

This is the first time in the whole GEO (Special Ops Policemen) history that one of their agents die.

It seems those bastards intended to blast the whole building to kill all the policemen in there.

Now: Who is to blame for this? Is Aznar still an assasin? What Zapatero is going to do?

My opinion: Never give up against terrorists. They want us to call back our troops in Irak and Afghanistan. We should stay as long as needed. With terrorists, if you give up once, they will keep killing to achieve what their want.

Actually, I think with terrorists they will keep trying to kill people regardless of whether one "gives in" to them or not. These are not rational people. If they were rational, they wouldn't be blowing up trains and apartment buildings.

In my opinion the way to stop them is to catch them and to make their recruiting grounds less "fertile" so they aren't able to convince others to follow their ways.

Hmmm... any more and we'll have to move this discussion to the politics area wink

Seriously, though, thank you Eduardo for posting this news. Since it is a nice sunny Saturday here, I wasn't even thinking about listening to the news. Your post was the first I heard of the apartment bomb.

I hope the remaining police officers who were injured are able to make full recoveries. Prayers and condolences to the family of the officer who died.

Wife has family in Leganes. She just called sister-in-law. Wife's nephew, home from duty as a Helicopter Pilot in Canarias, said the building where this happened is in a new Urbanizacion in Leganes where none of the residents know one another - people are coming and going all the time: probably the kind of environment terrorists like to find; somewhere they don't call attention to themselves.

It appears to me that Spain's Intelligence and Law Enforcement services are doing a great job: better than France or Germany!

Eddie, keep in mind that our police has a lot of training due to ETA terrorism.

These Al-Qaeda terrorists have a worse organization and infrastructure than ETA. They are only more dangerous because they are willing to kill as many people as possible, but they are more easily found by police.

This cell appears to be dismantled, but there are others in Spain (some estimations say 300 terrorists or so). In a country like ours which has more than a million moslems it is very easy for them to come here and disguise among their fellow countrymen.

Fernando, apparently the leader of the 11 March terrorist bombings was killed in this encounter. This from Bloomberg news:
Quote:
April 4 (Bloomberg) -- Serhane Ben Abdelmajid, identified by Spain as the leader of the March 11 terrorist attacks that killed 191 people in Madrid, was among those who died yesterday in a police raid, Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes said.

Ben Abdelmajid, known as ``the Tunisian,'' was among four terrorists who killed themselves by detonating explosives as police tried to enter their apartment in the Madrid suburb of Leganes, Acebes said. The blast also killed a police officer.

The raid was part of the investigation following Spain's worst terrorist attack, which injured more than 1,500 people. Arrest warrants were issued for six suspects in connection with the March bombings. Since the attack, 24 people have been arrested, including two Syrians, two Indians, two Spaniards and 15 Moroccans. Some have been released.

``After the arrests made and the suicide of the terrorists yesterday, the main terrorists behind March 11 are detained or dead,'' Acebes said at a press conference in Madrid.

The March 11 explosions were Europe's most deadly terrorist attack since the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270 people.

The Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group is the main suspect in the March 11 attacks, Acebes said earlier this week. Police found a videotape two days after the March 11 bombings claiming the attacks in the name of al-Qaeda.

Dynamite, Detonators

The explosives and detonators found in the flat in Leganes are the same type as those used in the March 11 attacks and found Friday on rail tracks linking Madrid and Seville, Acebes said. Police found in the flat 10 kilograms of dynamite, 200 detonators, and a belt loaded with 2 kilograms of explosives.

``They were ready to commit new attacks,'' Acebes said. ``The police yesterday saved a lot of lives.''

The investigation is still under way and police are trying to find two or three more suspects, collaborators and links with other terrorist groups, Acebes said.

MM I hope you're having a great time in Spain--wish I were there.
Now, can you remove American Jihad, who seems to have joined us to cause trouble?
Maybe you need to set up some kind of flagging system, so you don't have to comb through every thread every minute.
Happy travels, MM.
