After searching and reading the threads regarding safety in Barcelona, I still have some questions.

I am looking at a hostal east of Playa Cataluna and am wondering whether there will be much foot traffic or people about along C.de Fontanella / Ronda de Sant Pere at night? What about Via Laietana? We have never been to Spain but have traveled elsewhere and understand basic personal safety precautions.

When the Gothic quarter is referred to, is this the entire area from Las Ramblas to Laietana and Fontanella to Passig de Colom?

One thread indicated that El Ravel was not a great area to be walking thru at night. Are there any other areas that readers would recommend we avoid. We use to think we were invincible but have aged and would just prefer to avoid the hassle now.

Thanks for any feedback!

The area of gothic quarter and barrio chino is great during the day but at night it can be a little dangerous. If you can find a hostal by avenida diagonal it would be better.
