My husband is a beer fanatic (in fact, his job title at Whole Foods is beer specialist) and has found Naturbier on the internet. Is it any good? And can anyone recommend any other brewpubs in Madrid? Thanks!!

pbhorton,

Yes, I know Naturbier, great homemade natural bier. MM and friends go there sometimes.

Bars in Madrid generally have only one or two types of beer, pilsener or lager biers in most cases. Mahou is the most popular one because is a Madrid beer company.
You can find easily other Spanish brands like San Miguel , Cruzcampo , Estrella Damm .
Among the Spanish beers my favorite ones are Alhambra (specially Alhambra Reserva 1925, 6.4º) from Granada, Estrella de Galicia from Galicia, and Ambar from Zaragoza city. These beers are lager, but a bit tastier and stronger than other Spanish ones.

Beers in Madrid are served really cold, in some cases the will serve them in a frozen glass (they put it into the fridge), I particuarly don't like it and then I ask for an ordinary glass.
The way tap beer is served in Madrid is different to other places. At the most genuine and traditional Madrid bars they will serve beer by moving the glass up and down several times, then they stop for a moment to take some froth, and serve a bit more, this is to get a perfect creamy head. Then they will put the glass over the bar with a strong knock. They do all these things very fast. In these tipically Madrid places you can eat great tapas. People in general go in groups, they drink small glasses and every member of the group pay one round. Probably they will have only one or two rounds with some tapas and then they will go to a different bar. I love these bars they are so genuine and lively.

But if you are real beer lovers then you will have to visit one of the following places:

Taberna la Ardosa , the best place to enjoy a Guinness served as it has to be served, very slowly. Calle Colón 13, Metro "Tribunal" or "Chueca" .

Cervecería Oldenburg , this tavern has a Guinness record for having the largest number of beer names (over 250 from all over the world) in the smallest place. They have eight different tap biers, they allways have the tap beer of the month. It is at Calle Alburquerque 13, Metro "Bilbao".

Opposite Oldenburg, at calle Cardenal Cisneros you have the Kloster bar, nice place lots of German and Belgian beers.

In Calle Cardenal Cisneros nearly you have Cervecería L'Europa. This place have lots of German, Belgian and some British beers. I like very much the German white tap beer Franciskaner. The place is usually crowded by noisy youngsters. The food here is not very good.

Finally my favorite place, Cafeeke. It's at calle Arco de Cuchilleros 30 from the Plaza Mayor. Belgian beers. I love the Belgian Chimey, a trappist beer. The owner says its bar is one of the 17 bars serving Chimay tap beer in the world, the only one in Spain. Don't eat here, not very good food.

Oh! you can also visit one of the many Irish pubs in Madrid for Guiness, Murphy's red, Kilkenny's red beer, and more. There is one place where they have Scotish brown ale beer Tennent's, delicious.

Ho ho ho! I am thirsty now and it is time for lunch, so I am going to Madrid centre.

I've gone a number of times to the Plaza Santa Ana terraza of Naturbier and liked it just fine. They have a variety of home-brewed beers but, honestly, I can't taste the difference between theirs and other cervecerías. I'm no expert, mind you. :jump:
