My family and I will be in Madrid during September 10-14 and Malaga through September 14-21, and I would like to go to a restaurant that may offer Flamenco shows. Does anyone know of any? Also, I'm vegetarian and what would you reccommend?

Sorry, I don't know much about vegetarian dining. A cousin and I dined at a vegetarian restaurant in Barcelona last Summer and it was quite crowded. A niece of my wife's ordered a vegetarian pizza at el Pato Mudo restaurant in the Hotel Diana (Barajas).

As for Flamenco: There's a Restaurant in Madrid's Parque de Retiro (just inside the O'Donnell street park entrance). It's called Florida Park. The show is more folkloric than just Flamenco but a part of it will be the more classical Sevillanas. I like it because it also features Jotas Aragonesas which I consider more the national dance of Spain than Flamenco.

Casa Patas has a decent show for about 25€ a person in Madrid. I did it last summer with two kids.

I have just returned from 3 weeks in Spain. I spent two weeks at a language school in the city of Málaga and there is lots to do in Málaga. I stumbled across a flamenco show at the Teatro Cervantes one night and it was spectacular. You should check the theater when you get in that area to see what is showing while you are there.

If you go to the theater, the seats in the first 11 rows of the theater are at a level below the stage. I recommend row 12 and back if you sit on the floor. It is a beautiful theater!!!!

We really enjoyed the flamenco show at the Café de Chinitas in Madrid. We have seen the show twice and it is great. The location is very near to the Hotel Opera --two blocks from the Tryp Ambassador Hotel . There is a dinner show, but we have gone to the show that starts at 10:00 P.M. The price is about $30.00, and includes one drink. The show is about 2 1/2 hours and the dance company is great. I think you will love it!

Andrés , let's not confuse the Corral de la Pacheca in Madrid, www.corraldelapacheca.com (it's sort of a legendary place, but I would not recommend it now since it's pricey, touristy, a little out of the way from the historic centre and run by “not-so-legit-people” ) with the Corral de la Morería, which is a good choice. Casa Patas and Café de Chinitas are also excellent choices for the authentic thing . And I can also recommend Las Carboneras , in Plaza Conde de Miranda 1, tel: 915428677, closed on Sundays, average price €35; and Torres Bermejas, in Mesonero Romanos 11, tel: 915233322, average price €63.

As for vegetarian eateries, my two favourites in Madrid are the same ones I recently recommended for “most romantic restaurants” , that is: www.casaescondida.net , and La Isla del Tesoro, in Manuel Malasaña 3, tel: 915931440; however there are many more….¡Qué aproveche!//Bon appétit Maria!

I hate to inject a discordant note, but as a former professional flamenco performer, I would say that Casa Patas in Madrid MIGHT have the real thing, on a rare, good night. Usually it has a tourist- level show. For the only truly authentic flamenco performed by <<real afecciónados del flamenco>> go to what used to be <<La Solea>> now --- errg, help me out MadridMan, what is its new name? Well, I will research it. I posted the information in another thread some time ago. Try to go on a Thursday night, and get there before 11 or you won't be able to get in. By the way no less an expert than the late, great, Juan Alvarez, the luthier, gave me this advice! Also if you see anyplace with Curro de Jerez playing, you might want to check it out. Sometimes he plays for tourist shows, but he always warns me to stay away. Just a warning!

Lest I unleash a storm of controversy (and flamenco is a subject which stirs it up), you need to understand the advice I gave in the previous post will not end up taking you to a "flamenco show," which us usually a great deal of stamping about, shouting and so forth. If you wish to pay 15 to 20&#8364; each and see such a spectacle, naturally you are welcome. It will have about as much to do with flamenco as a dude ranch does with a real cattle drive. The alternative I recommended will cost you nothing to enter, just the moderately overpriced drinks which are usual in bars, and maybe a little chipped into the hat passed around to help the performers. They are not paid. They come and perform because they are flamencos, it is their art, and they enjoy sharing it with like-minded people who know the flamenco and appreciate its nuances. You will probably not see much, if any, dancing, but if you do it just might be very, very good. You might or might not hear good flamenco. You will hear authentic flamenco, sung by Spanards and Gitanos, and if it is one of those special nights when the <<duende>> strikes, you will be a part of something you, and the others in the cafe, will never forget: the flamenco as it sometimes is, at its height. I guarantee you will NOT have much, if any, chance of this occuring at a "flamenco show!" Flamenco is much like Jazz, it relies upon improvization, inspiration and is an authentic outlet for the emotions of the performers. Take a chance. Hang out with the locals. Not many people even know about this place, especially since it moved from Cava Baja. This is something I choose to share with my friends at MadridMan.com.

A final note: Please, if you are not adept at the "compás" (rhythms) of flamenco, do not try to join in the "palmas" (rhythmic hand-clapping accompaniment). You will annoy the performers and probably be gently (or not so gently) asked to stop! Jaleo is an art in itself. Shouts of encouragement ("¡Olé!" etc.) ARE appropriate, and much appreciated. Now you will fit right in and not make a "tonto" of yourself!

Good point, Martin, about the difference between a flamenco show and authentic flamenco experience. The place you are thinking of in Madrid which used to be La Solea is called Monteleon. You beat me to the punch with Monteleon's information! Good going! If I can get my wife to promise not to accuse me of sneaking out with a señorita I will try to go with you whenever. Hopefully my friend José El Duende will be there. One word of caution: I think it will be closed on Sunday and Monday nights. La Soleá was, but I might be wrong about Sundays, I am not sure. Best to check by calling in advance.

MadridMan, how about getting a juerga together at Monteleon in Madrid with MM friends? How about it folks? If there is enough interest, and people would be interested in paying, say, $25 each or so, depending on what the expenses were and how many are in the group, I could see if some of my gypsy flamenco contacts might be able to get a private juerga (flamenco fiesta) together for us. Curro de Jerez is back in town, (after another Japan tour!), and he would be able to advise me. I have to get in touch with him this week anyway to give him a painting I made for him.

Your insight to Monteleon's is greatly appreciated and I look forward to a good show. My love and appreciation for music and dance are a key plus to me, and I would rather see an authentic show than watch flamenco dancers stomping around clapping their hands for tourists! My father plays guitar and I'm sure he would appreciate a good show as well. I can't wait to see Madrid for the first time!!!

In the month of September, do any of you know of any schedules events in Madrid?
