Today my visiting sister and 4.75-year old nephew rented a rowboat to row around El Estanque (lake) in Retiro Park. HE LOVED IT!! I rowed us off the launch until we reached the steps leading down into the water and my nephew was thrilled to see the 4 lion statues and water spouting fish. Then my nephew took over and, of course, he tended to row us around in circles but he had fun - definitely the highlight of HIS visit (FAR better for him than looking at all those paintings in the Prado Museum shortly before). My sister, an onetime crew (rowing) champion in college, expertly rowed us in a straight line back to the dock.
The cost is 4.25 Euros for a 45 minute rental. We went around the lake, hitting (almost literally) all four corners of the lake in about 35 minutes, all taking turns rowing. What fun! I'd always wanted to do that. The oars seemed to be about 100 years old and the boats not much younger but were in excellent condition, brightly painted, and very stable, flat-bottom rowboats. And what a perfect, springlike day too. It was cool, perfectly clear sky, no wind at all.
I told my nephew I'd take hime to the aforementioned (above, in the previous posting) to the Zoo and he was thrilled with the possibility.
After the boating he had fun throwing bread to the pigeons and chasing them away.
Saludos, MadridMan
