rere..... Hehehee.. I had to laugh when I read your subject line. Are you asking about the CHUECA neighborhood of Madrid or of the town of CUENCA in Spain? Hehehee..... Please remember to put city locators in your subject line for specificity. Let me/us know and I'll add it to your post. Thanks! Either way, have you tried using the SEARCH link above/right? Try that using CUENCA-or-CHUECA RESTAURANT as your keywords. Saludos, MadridMan of "MadridMan's Spain (not only Madrid) Message Board" [ 10-12-2001: Message edited by: MadridMan ]

I always recommend my customers a restaurant called "Vivares" at Hortaleza, 52. I was told by a regular customer it was a good place and they have a menu for just 1000 pesetas. Since then, all the people who have been there have told me it they liked it.
"Marsot", at Pelayo, 6 (I think), it's also said to be a good value for money.
Regards,
Antonio

Sorry, I do mean Chueca. I've been visiting Madrid for several years and admit I've always said it wrong. :o . MM, what do you mean by "city locators?" Thanks everyone for the suggestions because I'll be in the neighborhood for several weeks studying spanish, and I sure like to eat.

rere, by "city locators" I mean to place the city name in your subject to which you are referring to better explain about which city you are discussing and to direct those with special interest in those cities. Please remember that MadridMan's SPAIN Message Board is about ALL of Spain and not about any particular city so "city locators" are extremely important. Thanks! Saludos, MadridMan

We were sent (by a guy we met in a gallery elsewhere in Chueca) to "Gastrotec" right on Plaza de Chueca. Even though we arrived at nine (a reasonable hour at which to dine in Madrid, I thought), the place was deserted, and we had to ring the bell to gain entry. A little awkward...
Once inside though, we had an "intersting" meal. Stepane and Arturo (proprietors of Gastrotec) specialize in skate/ray (think stingray) and Stephane even brought out an little plastic ray to clarify what the menu meant. Richard orderd the ray, "Gallego style," I think). I ordered the (beef) entrecote.
Stephane has a note on the menu cautioning diners that she doesn't cook meet much beyond the "very rare" stage. Normally that's OK with me, but this one was almost mooing. Not that I didn't eat everything on my plate....
Richard has said he'll probably not order skate again (if we ever saw it on a menu again). Not terrible, just an acquired taste probably too informed by images of stealth bombers gliding soundlessly though the sea....
All in all, as I said, an "interesting" evening.

Hugh, the place sounds cool. But I'll probably have to "skate" by it. I'm fairly unadventurous in the food department.
