You hit the nail on the head. Nothing but homegrown talent with Athlétic de Bilbao. They even have their minor leagues like we have in the States in baseball. Their only problem is, they are forced to go against the best talent in the world just to be competitive, and from a population that is what??? 6 million at most???

It's like rooting for the old NY Mets in baseball, when Casey Stengel was managing them. I remember him saying, "We ain't beat yet! The game hasn't even started." Of course the Mets highlight film that year was about three plays long, and Marvelous Marv Throneberry (everyone's castoff) was their most valuable player.

I actually support Espanyol in Spain, and Fiorentina overall in Italy, and not Atletico de Madrid para nada. I enjoyed the desperation of trying to buy Rayo Vallecano to get into the 1st. Pathetic.

And Barça - almost as bad as Real Madrid.

Espanyol was in a giving mood that day or else they were busy forging passports and visas for their foriegn players.

Actually we won two nil in Barcelona the year before AND if I remember rightly we shared four goals with Espanyol in Malaga in the return game........unfortunately, Espanyol didn't score any of them! (Oh dear, I am really enjoying this thread :p )

Asterault, I think you didn't read OK te news about buying Rayo Vallecano. It was the owner of Rayo Vallecano who offered the team to the president of Atlético, but he refused to buy it.
Atlético, even in Segunda it's the third more important team of Spain, and sooner or later will be again in primera fighting for the league. The fourth team it's really far in number of supporters, championships and so on.. :p

I think they [Atlético] train against Begoña C.F. in Bilbao...and the field is definitely dirt (they only play on grass when they forget to weed). And those "classic" uniforms?

Well Asterault, your news is maybe a little bit different that what I read in Marca , but you can understand what you want. As you know the sport presse has to sell a newspaper each day so they write and write based in rumours. In your news we can read..

I don't know if you remember when in the radio someone said that Atlético had sold his new promise F.Torres to Valencia, and then it wasn't true, all the rumours about buying referees, etc..nothing true, there are a lot of interests pro and against Atlético in segunda..

So you can understand what you want, but I find easier to justify that you sell your team to pay the bills as otherwise it will go to Segunda B, than buying for being in primera as you have no justification.
Anyway, I hope that you will became Atlético supporter in Madrid.

We now have to play in the stadium La Rosaleda, Asterault, because Pepe sold his finca. We tried it on the beach for a while but had to give it up when the players found they were put off too easily by the delicious smells of the sardines being cooked on the open fires of the chiringuitos.

But we will have an excellent stadium shortly as it is all being knocked down and renovated. It will probably look a lot better than those enormous blue canopies stretched over the seats behind the goals in your ground. And we can see the action, whereas your spectators must be nearly half a kilometre from the grass?

Of couse I support Athletic Club de Bilbao, not only for it is the team of my city, but because of its players admission policy.

I hate Real Madrid, and would like to see it lose against any neighbourhood friends' team from any country in the world , because for five years they used the cheapest way to win the competition. Buying referees was cheaper than paying huge amounts for players. Ask anybody who is not a supporter of that team. Better if you could see some matches randomly.

Anyway, I respect Atlético de Madrid, no matter they are in Second Divisio, but saying it is the third team in Spain ..., it is too, too, too much. In the old good times it was one of the best five, now it is not (by now).

I am from England and love all things Spanish. I'm in Madrid in January and would love to see some Spanish football. Any ideas? Is it possible to get a ticket to a big game & how much would it cost me?(Almost impossible to see a major English club right now, especially after our thrashing of the once mighty Germans. (No offense to Germans, by the way, but you were AWFUL!)

amonline , its quite easy to get tickets for either Real or Atletico . Ive been to both grounds twice and bought tickets at the taquillas outside the grounds the day before the game . Both grounds have seating plans outside so if youre spanish might let you down just point .If you visit www.soccer-spain.com , you will be able to find out who is at home on the weekend you are there.Cheapest tickets high up behind the goals cost 2000pts at Atleti and 3000 at Real.If you want to know more about the matchday experience post again.
