In answer to the question about protocol when students who are too young to drink alcohol go out for tapas: NO PROBLEM! Just order coca cola with the tapas, like every Spanish 12 year old does! When do Spanish kids start having a beer with tapas? Depends on age, and if they are en familia. But in any event, ordering a coke or agua at any age is totally normal.

Another very popular non alcoholic drink is "mosto" basically a non fermented grape juice. But coke , trinaranjus (a kind of orange juice) is just fine.
