Since "El Dia de San Valentin" is coming up soon, I thought I'd post some of my favorite vinos... IMHO, some of the best wine values in the WORLD are from Spain. Aside from being great wines in their own right, the lack of marketing hype and a weak peseta makes them tremendously underpriced on the US market. Give them a try and let me know what you think! (prices are approximate)
---------------
Rioja: Baron de Oña ($19), Conde de Valdemar ($13), Finca Allende ($16), Montecillo Gran Riserva ($19)
THe first 3 of these represent the "new style" of Rioja wines -- less oaky and more balanced. And, I believe that the last 2 earned scores of 90+ from Wine Spectator! If you can find Finca Allende (production is rather low), buy all that you can afford -- especially the 1996, it is a knockout.
------------
Rueda: Belondrade y Lurton ($19), Sanz Rueda Superior ($10)
A somewhat lesser-known area near Valladolid, Rueda is known for its crisp white wines made primarily from the verdejo grape. Ruedas have a very fragrant & floral bouquet, yet are clean and dry tasting -- great with seafood or as an aperitif.
--------------
Tarragona: Castell del Falset ($10), Barranc del Closos ($10)
Tarragona is just outside of Barcelona & is producing some big, powerful reds that are worth a try.
--------------
Priorat: Finca Dofi ($50), Clos Mogador ($45), Cims de Porrera ($65) Les Terraces ($27)
Priorat is a star on the rise... It is small wine region near Barcelona whose terrain consists primarily of rocky cliffs and mountains. Ironically, many of Spain's best red wines are made here, despite the harsh conditions. However, the production is low and the international demand is high, which leads to some hefty price tags! Definitely "special occasion" wine...
Saludos,
