We were recently in Burgos and were fascinated by the strange trees lining the promenade along the river. Since it was early Spring there was no foliage, but we understand they provide a canopy in the summer. Anyone know the name of these trees?
By the way, Burgos has great Easter week processions.

Adios

Hi Hector

Were they maple trees I wonder? They certainly do provide a lovely canopy of shade in the summer.

Lol - how silly do I feel? When I wrote maple tree, I was really meaning plane tree (yes you're really going to believe that one aren't you? :p )

I have the same picture too, but taken in August ... complete with my children with icecreams and my fingers dangling in a fountain.

I feel a silly wally ... maples indeed lol. It will be good for someone to come up with the difinitive answer.

They are definitely plane trees (plátanos de sombra, a relative of the sycamore). These are the same trees that you see all over Madrid, but they are pollarded--cut back to cause them to grow in a low canopy shape.

I agree with madridmadridmadrid that these trees are "plátanos de sombra" or "London plane" in English, scientific name "platanus hispanica".
Plátano de sombra
London plane
I am allergic to their polen.
There are lots of them planted in the streets of many Spanish cities.

Definitely they are plane trees. The technique used to get that shape is called "desmochado" in Spanish (pollarded in English). They pollard the trees and
then connect the branches from one tree to the others', creating a canopy. This technique is commonly used in Central North of Spain (Cantabria, Basque Country, La Rioja, Aragon, Navarra, and the provinces of Burgos and Soria)
