We will be visiting Madrid for a few days beginning May 1. I know May 1 is May Day/Labour Day - are there special events? Are most places closed? What places or sights are open? Are there also festivites on May 2? Thank you.

1st of May is a national holiday, with most commerces closed. 2nd of May is the Madrid Community Day, and it is a holiday only in the Madrid region (Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid).

I will be in Madrid on holiday from 27th April to 4th May. I have a couple of friends there, but they are both working and therefore I will see them only in their spare time.
Is anyone around and interested in meeting up for a chat, or for the following:
-visiting CD and musical instruments shops
-going for tapas and copas
-going to the cinema (independent movies preferred)
-visiting bookshops
-going dancing (I prefer indie music, goth, or good rock. I also like world music)
