I'll be going to Madrid in May for a week. I've been looking online (Amazon, etc.) for a street map of the city to buy.

I would appreciate any recommendations, including pros and cons of the various available maps.

Thanks.

Hello: I'm sure you can download and also purchase a map of any city by going to National Geographic Map Machine - it has an online Atlas http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/.
Madrid is lovely!

Borders sells a good, laminated map in their Travel Section. It's two sides and includes a street listing and also a metro map. It's about $7 and is small enough to put in a purse or pocket. I carried mine around for the 6 months that I lived in the city and used it a number of times. It even came in handy a few times when tourists stopped me on the street to ask me how to get somewhere.

The DK Eyewitness Guides are not only a decent guidebook, but they have good map pages with a concise index in the back. You can kill two birds with one stone.

For those who are more cost conscious, El Corte Inglés has free maps of the major cities where they have department stores. You just need to go to the customer service section and ask for a "plano de Madrid"...or whatever city you are in.

The maps have all the Corte Inglés locations conveniently pinpointed. Unfortunately, they do not have an index of streets, but do cover the most touristy areas of the city. smile

If you want to find a specific address with map of the area online you can check out www.qdq.com (callejero fotografico) or www.mappy.es
Good maps of the Madrid center are avaliable for free from the tourist office in Madrid and most hotels. (and all the other places people have mentioned)
Enjoy your stay!
