I know there has been alot posted on the subject of exchange rates, credit cards, atms etc. I will be leaving in less than one month to spend the summer in spain. For a variety of reasons I think I am going to take traveller's checks and cash them as needed at banks. I know the offical exchange rate is about 193 pesetas/dollar. Can anybody tell me what rate they are now getting at Spanish banks (for checks not cash) net of commissions. Do you think I will still net out in the 180's?

look at www.oanda.com. The rate you get at the banks is supposedly 4% less than the official rate.

we got everything from 182 to 195. Remember that American express offices don't charge a commission to cash their travelers checks. THere's one in most larger cities. When we couldn't find an amex, we found caja madrid to be a good alternative. Good Luck!

I would go the Amex route as well. You should be netting in the 180s to answer your question. The Amex office is just below the Cortes building in-between Sol and Paseo del Prado (Plaza de las Cortes, 2). They're open from 9:00-17:30, M-F; 8:00-12:00 on Saturday.

Don't forget, there are two AMEX offices in the airport, one inside the baggage claim and one outside. (It's actually the same office but you can access it from either side).
