This is a tip for anyone who wants to drink coffee the English way. Order Nescafe- agua kaliente (hot water) and milk. You will get some funny looks, but after a while in spain you will want one. The local stuff is very strong and if you order cafe American they only add milk to it. drinkable but it did get on my nerves after a while.

Ron,
Clever idea! In Madrid you can go to one of the VIPS restaurants and they will serve Cafe Americano. I went there once :p and was amused at the Spanish youngsters ordering it so I ordered one and it was not half bad. Or, if you are desperate there is always a Starbucks! I grew up on Spanish coffee so it was nice not to have to say "cafe expresso" for a change. Did you notice the wonderfully large sugar packets! I love them.

ugghhhhhh...why would anyone do such a thing? Spanish coffee is so good. Nescafe, on the other hand, is an abomination in the eyes of God.

Alright, so I may be prone to hyperbole, but Spanish coffee is second only to a good cafecito in Little Havana.

Booklady, those sugar packets are too big even for someone raised on Cuban coffee. It seems like a sure road to instant diabetes.
