Just for reminiscence: Does everyone (or anyone) remember palmeras? They're the flaky pastry usually coated with sugar, chocolate, nata or coco. I found the best palmeras in Spain in Barakaldo on Avda. de la Libertad at a street kiosko (not like anyone will go there, Barakaldo is NOT a tourist destination): Palmeras covered with WHITE chocolate.....BLISS

I was hopelessly addicted to the dark chocolate covered palmeras! I was once guided to the elusive palmera factory somewhere near Las Ventas where they sell them out of the back door at a small table to the public....still warm.

I, too, developed a palmera habit while in Spain. Sometimes chocolater-covered, sometimes plain, somtimes sugar-coated. Sigh.

Palmeras are really kinda heart shaped, right? They get hard when old, no? Fresh and flaky, yeah! (like my favorite people).

We referred to palmeras as "huge chocolate heart" cookies... one of my friends ate them every day from Confitería Madrileña in the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca... I meanwhile had pastel de manzana or helado de avellana. My mouth is watering!

rgf- you are correct. They do get pretty gross after a day, too. Good memory on that one.

Majesty318- I forgot about pastel de manzana. Shame on you for bringing that up! Now I need to go back!!!! Confitería Madrileña is a good place for those things...been there, eaten that!

I, too, have always loved palmeras. At TOPS grocery stores in NY state they sell something that is so much like a palmera. They market it as a french pastry.

I too am obsessed with the palmera, here I simply settle for the french version which is called a palmier...very tasty too but no chocolate covering...I just brought back the little palmera cookies in a box from the grocery store, not quite as good but will have to suffice as I detox from my recent trip.

My son has asked repeately if I could find a recipe for palmeras (the chocolate covered quasi-donut type. Does anyone know of a cookbook that has the recipe in it?
