By enlarge I have enjoyed all the food I’ve eaten in Madrid and have been fortunate enough to find a fantastic café for lunch near Palos de le Frontera.

However, one thing I miss is good, tasty and spicy food. I’m not talking about the ‘blow the top of your head off’ curries favoured by the intoxicated on Saturday night, but just a good and tasty chilli con carne with enough hot peppers to get the endorphins flowing.

Any restaurant suggestions?

Marko.

You mean a Mexican restaurant? In Madrid or where?

Yes, sounds like you're looking for Mexican food in Madrid. You can likely find a number of Mexican restaurants in Madrid these days but aside from those you could try one of the T.G.I.Fridays which will likely have a few Mexican dishes.

And aside from Mexican food, the bravas sauce in Patatas Bravas is nice-and-spicey but not particularly hot. You'll find Patatas Bravas in many many places in Madrid which serve tapas. In particular, the Las Bravas chain has pretty good ones. I love those!

Good luck and be sure to enjoy the typically non-spicey food of Spain! I can't wait to jam a fried squid sandwich into my salivating mouth!! Mmmmm....

Thanks both, but I am after something with a bit of spice, as tastey as they are Patatas bravas don't have the kick that I'm looking for. The reason I post rather than just head off to the nearest mexican, is that I have been warned that Spanish Indian/Mexican restaurants do not really serve hot food, that mostly everything has been toned down to suit the usual spanish palate.
I was hoping that someone here might have discovered a great place.

Many thanks,

Marko.

The_Keeper, I'm sorry to say it, but I think most people 'round these parts are a bit distracted right now. I'm sure there are some madrileño message board members who know of some good-n-hot Mexican restaurants but they're dealing with a lot these days and probably aren't frequenting the message board as much as usual.

Saludos, MadridMan

Hi MM,

Yeah I know, it is a very bad time in the city. I went along to the manifestación on Friday and just wondered through the streets after. Horribly, quiet. Saturday night was the same. Bars in which you usually have the fight to get in the doors had empty tables, and where you would normally hear the Spanish language you heard raised English and American voices.

I hope things return to something like normal soon, otherwise the perpetrators will have achieved their aims.

M.

Order Gambas al ajillo o Champinhones al ajillo and tell the restauranteur to go heavy on the guindilla. You can also get some rice dishes like Arroz a la Criolla spiced to your taste. I have never eaten a good Chili con carne in Spain (or in the U.S. anywhere east of the Mississippi). eek

Please post the name and other details about the cafe near Palos de la frontera. We often spend time at Mazagon o la Rabida. rolleyes

Not sure of the name of the cafe, but its' address is :-
Calle Fray Luis de Leon 14.
Two minutes walk from Palos de la Frontera Metro.
At lunchtimes has two Menu de Dia one for 9.80€ (the one which I chose from) and another for €20 (waiting for my birthday). It specialises in traditional home style cooked food. In the evening it serves fantastic tapas and raciones.
The staff do not speak English though are very patient (at least with me and my phrase book).
I heartilly recommend it.

I used to eat Spanish Omelette with Brava sauce when I was teen (15 years ago) in a place called El Rey de las Tortillas in Moncloa, I don't know if it'll be still open or where it was exactly. It was even better than patatas bravas.
I don't know if you like banderillas, although it's not a dish, but you'll enjoy them, it's a toothpick with an olive, a piece of chile and a vinegar cucumber. There are also another called piparra which is a vinegar chili with anchovie and olive... but hot food it's not so typical of Spain, I cannot think of other dishes right now.

Sorry, The_Keeper: I thought you were referring to Palos de la frontera in Huelva Province - the port from which Columbus sailed on his first voyage of discovery. :o
