I don't think there really is a Spring breaks per se. But Spaniards are fond of "puente," which is when a national holiday falls near a weekend, say a Thursday and they will take Friday off to make an extended 4-day weekend. Many go to the mountains for skiing, or to the southern coast, or maybe to the Canary Islands. Many will also go visit their families if they happen to be living away from their province of origin.

For Semana Santa, which might be considered to be the Spring Break equivalent, a lot of Spaniards will spend their holidays and off-time in the family village or in a second home if they own one. If neither of these apply, many Spaniards still go to Andalucía to enjoy the BIG festivities there for Semana Santa. Others, possibly more well-to-do persons might go to the beaches of Valencia, San Sebastián, or Santander. And more and more Spaniards are traveling abroad during their holidays. In the winter months since there's so little holiday/break time I think most people stay home and work their normal jobs, living their normal lives, awaiting the springtime and summer holidays.

March/April is early for San Sebastian or Santander beaches usless they use them as a base for Ski-trips to the mountains.

When Easter occurs earlier, ski slopes of the Pyrenees and Picos de Europa are 'open for business' during Semana Santa. My (wife's) nephew and his Fiancé, who live & work in Santiago, go skiing in Asturias when the University closes down during Semana Santa. There are some ski resorts closer to Madrid in the Guaderrama mountains: Navacerrada & Somosierra, but April might be a little late for them. rolleyes

Our Madrid family spends Semana Santa at their Condo on the Costa de la Luz cool

Morocco is a HUGE destination for Spaniards during Semana Santa (this year from the 9th to the 16th of April), primarily places such as Tangier, Chefchaouen, and Fes. In the CAdiz province, it is popular at winter weekends to do "turismo rural" and rent cottages in such villages such as Grazalema, Benaocaz, Zahara de la Sierra, etc.

I just read this article. What a shame. Spring break in Spain frown

Eighty hurt as Spanish drinking binge ends in riots

MADRID (Reuters) - A mass street drinking session by Spanish youths turned into a riot in Barcelona early on Saturday and 68 people were injured and 54 arrested in clashes between youths and riot police, police said.

Another 12 people were hurt and 16 arrested in clashes between police and street drinkers in the historic city of Salamanca, 180 kms (110 miles) northwest of Madrid, state radio said.

Tens of thousands of young people congregated in cities around Spain on Friday night in an attempt to hold the country's biggest street drinking session or "botellon" ("big bottle").

In Barcelona, the event degenerated into pitched battles between police and drinkers in the narrow old streets of the city center that lasted most of the night.

The riot began after midnight when youths began throwing bottles and cans at police who responded with baton charges and fired rubber bullets, according to media reports.

Firemen were called out to 50 blazes as the youths set fire to rubbish containers in the streets. Shop windows were broken and several shops ransacked, media reports said.

A spokesman for Barcelona municipal police blamed the disturbances on about 200 people who he said were out to cause trouble. He said the 68 injured included 37 police officers, some of whom suffered severe cuts when they were hit by bottles.

The "botellon" has become part of city life in Spain in recent years as teenagers, bored at home and too poor to go to bars, bought beer, spirits and cartons of wine from food stores and lounged around in plazas, drinking the night away.

Bombarded with noise, the stench of urine and vomit on the streets, many city councils brought in rules to ban drinking on the street.

Police now patrol many botellon hot spots at weekends, moving along groups of teenagers who mix cocktails with cheap spirits or "calimocho" -- red wine and cola.

Youths rallied revelers by email and SMS messages for "macrobotellones" in 20 cities around Spain on Friday, while authorities pleaded with parents to keep their children under control and warned of the danger of under-age drinking.

Heavy rain put a damper on the events in several cities on Friday while in Madrid a tight police cordon around central squares dissuaded drinkers.

Some city authorities, such as those in Seville, Granada and Valladolid, allowed the gatherings to take place in designated areas and up to 25,000 people gathered in the southern city of Granada.

"We've never seen anything like this in Granada," a police spokesman said. "There's no doubt that this is the biggest botellon in Spain..."

Gretchen6, the macrobotellón wasn't considered any kind of spring break for Spain, just an event for youthful, rebelious drunkenness. The microbotellónes happen nearly every Friday and Saturday night throughout Spain but his has nothing to do with "vacations".
