In an effort to get away from the primary tourist route I am planning on staying two nights in this small town over Easter week. Based on the higher prices for rooms, I know I won't be alone, but does anyone have any reccomendations for sights, beaches, hikes or restaurants? Thanks

Hi - SJ has nice beach of its own but you can also walk to Playa de los Genoveses, a few kilometres out of town. La Playa de Monsul you could reach as well. The people at your hotel or the tourist office will be able to send you in the right direction.

And, by the way, the village itself is incredible. It is a fishing village only recently touched by tourism, and the nearby beaches are "wild" (as wild as a beach can be in Spain, I mean, it doesn't have any infrastructure like showers, parkings, or nearby roads). This is due to the fact that San José is inmerse in a National Park (Parque Nacional del Cabo de Gata y San José).

I think it is well worth of the visit. Don't miss the restaurants at the sea port. Fresh fried fish, ajoblanco, shellfish,...

quick question: How hot does it get in Almería in the summer? Is it unbearable?

Almería has a dry weather in the inner land (because it has almost a desertic climate) and more humid and hot in the coast. It is more or less as the rest of the spanish coast in summer though.
