Last month I went to Andalucía, where I had spent one week a year just before Christmas from 1989 to 1994, after which I was really ill.
I wanted to get to Córdoba again for several reasons: I love the general feeling of the place; I wanted to see the mosque again; I wanted to see Spring in the patios for which Córdoba is famous; most of all I wanted to see the site of the ancient city of Medinat Al-Zahara.
Having spent time away from it, I am now convinced that Córdoba is my favourite Spanish city and, in addition to the fabulous Mezquita which justifies any number of visits and the riverside below it with the Roman bridge and the Arab mills, I particularly recommend the following:
Medinat Al-Zahara; see above; now easy to reach for the carless!
Museo Arqueológico; in how many of these museums have they discovered accidentally that it is the site of a Roman villa? it's not only the Roman stuff that's worth seeing;
Plaza de la Corredera; unique and [at last] brightened up;
Jardín Botánico just beyond the Alcázar;
Palacio del Marqués de Viana; do the €3 visit to the patios only [12 of them plus a garden with a good leaflet in English]
I don't get here a lot so if you want more, e-mail me on davidcross@frogsmore72.fsnet.co.uk.
