Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had been to the horse racing and what they thought of it?
How does it compares in price to the bullfights?
Would you need to book in advance or could you just turn up for a race?
Lastly do people go there for betting or more just for entertainment?

Thanks,
Mark

After having seen a mozo gored to death at las Ventas bullring, I was 'put off' from the bullfights for some time. The Hipodromo became my Sunday afternoon entertainment.
It's a wholesome atmosphere, unlike Racetracks in the U.S; it's more a family outing. As a matter of fact, families used to picnic in the infield.
It's much cheaper than going to the bullfights (unless you are a heavy bettor and loser); I don't know what the minimum bet in Euros will be but you used to could bet like 200 pesetas (about $1 USD). There used to be 3-classes of tickets: Infield, Grandstand and General admission(?).
You don't need reservations - buy your 'tout sheets' at one of the kiosks near Metro Arguelles.
BTW
I believe the 'meet' moves to San Sebastian for at least the month of August (maybe more).

the question is...

I know it have been closed for some years and recently the concession was given to other company really interested in opening it again and having races and bets.

But by the moment i think is still closed.

V. Diaz gave you the correct info. Sorry to have given you mis-information. eek It looks like you may have to go to Donastia San Sebastian to see las carreras de caballo in Spain.
