I have a few question for our wonderful Spanish members of the MadridMan family. I never heard the hymn sung while I was in your magnificent nation.

1.Do most Spaniards know the words?

2.Are there different versions of the same hymn using Gallego, Basque, and Catalan words? The Canadian anthem has a set of lyrics in French for Quebec, so I imagine the song has been translated into the regional languages of Spanish.

3.What day(s) is it played most often? October 11?

the hynm of Spain has no words.

For most Spaniards, the song Viva España is tacky, mildly kitsch and has Francoist connotations. You're more likely to hear drunken tourists humming it than anyone else.
As for the national anthem, this, as has been pointed out , has no lyrics. There was a version during Franco with words, but the less, said the better!

What is the official name to the national anthem of Spain. Did this anthem ever have words in the past?

Also this Himno de Artillería, is this for the armed forces, or is this the one that Franco touted?

The anthem's origins are unknown, but by the mid-18th century it was called the Marcha Granadera. In 1770 Carlos III declared it Marcha de Honor, and began to use it at official acts. In 1869 a competition is held to choose a new anthem, but none of the entries convinced the jury, who decided to stick with what now had become a tradition.
1908. By now it's called Marcha Real Española.
During Alfonso XIII's reign some words were tagged on but never captured the public's imagination.
During the Second Republic (1931 - 1939) it was substituted by the Himno de Riego, a rousing 19th century march.
The Marcha Real is restored to its official status in 1942. Words by José María Pemán were sometimes to be sung alomg with the marcha during the dictatorship, but never enjoyed official status.
The Spanish Constitution of 1978 ratified its use as the official national anthem. The state had to acquire the rights, by the way, from the family of Maestro Perez Casa, who had acquired them in 1908 as musical master of the military.
