I am probably an intermediate speaker of Spanish trying to improve. Can anyone suggest a good Spanish dictionary with definitions in Spanish?

This topic came up about a year ago. If you do a search on "Spanish-English" in the World Travel Forum you will find some suggestions.
Good Luck.....

I use "Diccionario básico de la lengua española" by Santillana. ISBN 84-294-4553-6
Very usedul and for each word it also gives sinónimos and antónimos.

Coincidentally, I own this very dictionary - it was a gift and was told it was one of the best.

I find it a very useful dictionary and would recommend it to those studying Spanish at Intermediate II or above.
It is not as small as those "pocket" dictionaries but at the same time it is not a big tome. It is easy to travel with and is more robust than the smaller dictionaries. I have had mine now for two years and it travels (in my rucksack) with me to Spain and get used fairly regularly at home. Despite this, the fairly firm cover (not hardback) protects it well.
At 9.50 Euros, it is very good value.

Slightly off topic, but a good online Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary in Wordreference.com

Check www.rae.es (Royal Spanish Language Academy) for its on-line dicctionary. It's free, it's official, it's on-line and it's in spanish smile

And check out Mozilla Firefox's built-in search bar.

You can look up a word in the RAE's dictionary using that bar. It's available in the Spanish Firefox version but it can be added to other versions too.
