Bush bodyguards clash with thievesFrom correspondents in Madrid, Spain
June 16, 2004
BODYGUARDS of US President George W. Bush's daughter Jenna were entangled in a fist fight with two men trying to steal a mobile phone in southern Spain, a US embassy official said today.
The incident happened on June 10 while the president's daughter was holidaying with friends in the coastal city of Tarifa, continental Europe's southernmost point, embassy spokesman John Law said.
She was sitting at a hotel terrace when two men tried to steal a mobile phone on the table in front of her.
Ms Bush's bodyguards reacted immediately as they noticed the men's intentions and rushed toward them.
One secret service agent punched a suspect on the mouth, Mr Law said.
He could not confirm reports by state news agency Efe that one of the secret service agents pointed his gun at one of the suspects.
Ms Bush was not hurt and did not press any charges against the men, who were not arrested, Efe reported.
Jenna Bush, 22, has been in Spain since late May when
she was making the Catholic pilgrimage trail known as the Way of St James to the northern city of Santiago de Compostela.Mr Law said she had already left Spain.
