Spanish music - 08/27/00 07:32 PM

I guess most of you know that Spanish music is not only Flamenco. There are many Spanish bands that I'm sure you will like to know.

So in your next trip to Spain, don't forget to try some Spanish music. You can do it at El Corte Inglés, Madrid Rock or Fnac. You could then buy some records and help to promote Spanish music in your country.

Madridman has some Spanish music at his All Spain Market section.

--------

For those of you who are already familiar with music from Spain here are some news:

Alejandro Sanz, whose last album sold 2 million copies (and that was in Spain only) is going to issue a new album in September.

Other bands's new albums are:

La Oreja de Van Gogh, (700000 copies sold of their first album)
Laura Pausini (more than 1 million copies sold) (She is Italian but sings in Spanish too)

And last, a new successful band now at the top of the selling lists: Estopa. They sold 150000 copies in just 1 week. Their music is a kind of flamenco / modern music (similar to Ketama).

Enjoy Spanish music,

Antonio

I just wanted to point out that, even with a million records sold in spanish, Laura Pausini is italian.

Re: Spanish music - 08/27/00 10:41 PM

I'll be in Madrid first week of October and looked up the Alejandro Sanz website but could not find when he'll be in concert. I think MM commented on that.
Antonio, any talk in Spain (since he'll have a new album out) if he'll be on tour anytime between October and December?

Re: Spanish music - 08/28/00 10:54 AM

Yeah, Radio Vinillo and "Los 40 principales" were the best. Too bad Radio Vinillo went out of business and "40 Principales" turn to a too commercial radio station...

Re: Spanish music - 08/28/00 11:24 AM

Yes, it's flamenco, but what about Camaron de la Isla and Paca de Lucía?
Manu Chau
Pata Negra, just to name a few...

Re: Spanish music - 08/28/00 12:15 PM

Francisco, yes, I meant Radio Vanilo, but when I listened faithfully, 84-87, there was a DJ that would say, "Radio Vanilolololololo"
It would drive my husband nuts that he(the DJ) would talk through half the song!

Re: Spanish music - 08/29/00 06:36 AM

Ketama
Jarabe de Palo
Radio Tarifa (saw them in London)

Placido Domingo
(!Granada! Tu tierra esta llena,
de lindas mujeres,
de sangre del sol!)
Ole!

Camaron, Tomatito, Moraito, Paco Penia.
"Agua pura, que lleva el rio"
Falla, Albeniz.

About the only thing I don't like is Spanish rock music, but then I don't much like any rock music (after about 1976!)

I'm very glad to see that you all know a lot about music in Spain.

Well, did you know you can listen to Cadena 40 Principales La Rioja through the internet?.

Shawn enjoyed some of the current hits in Spain with me (I live 100 meters away from the radio station!).

If you want to join me at the Madridman chat room, I will tell you which are the most popular songs in Spain nowadays and which are my favourites. (By the way, I'm usually there about 1:00 am Spain time).

¡Viva la música!,

Antonio

Re: Spanish music - 08/30/00 01:03 AM

Thank you Antonio!

The listening experience was delightfull. I recommend other posters tune into the links provided by MadridMan. My previous knowledge of Spanish music was quite limited, but after an evening of listening to it with the added insights from Antonio I feel slightly more informed on the Spanish popular music scene.

This tutorial Spanish might have been a costly one though, as I now feel compeled to upgrade my computer speakers and sound card. Additionally, I will have to purchase a least one of Alejandro Sanz's disc, and perhaps several of Jose El Frances whose fusing of flamenco and pop is outstanding.

This a bit far afield, but it seems to me that Antonio should find computer work with a music recording company. His passion for music coupled with his computer expertize makes for a fantastic career path. Capital, Virgen, et al give Antonio a call!

Spain truly is "todo abajo el sol"

Re: Spanish music - 08/30/00 09:58 PM

Thanks Shawn for your compliments.

Be aware that José el Francés is a well-known flamenco musician. His latest hit "Ya no quiero tu quere" has been a great success. However, I think the rest of his songs aren't flamenco-pop. Unless you also like "pure" flamenco, you may not like the rest of his songs.

By the way, there are several "remixes" of this song, an acustic version an another one featuring Niña Pastori.

As for your computer sound system, you won't get much improvement to listen to the radio on the internet. Also you may want to connect your soundcard to your hi-fi. This will give you better sound than most computer speakers.

Regards,

Antonio
