I'm always on the lookout for books set in or about Spain. I've just stumbled on one. THE MAGIC STRINGS of FRANKIE PESTO begins and ends in Villareal, Spain with a good bit of the narrative taking place there. The author is Mitch Albom. [TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE] I started it without knowing the Spain connection because I really liked the book TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE. Its about a guitarist and it uses real life musicians as characters. Although a work of fiction there is even a music CD that has been created in conjunction with it. I think its a worthwhile read.

Have you read the Chris Stewart books about life in the Alpujarrras in Andalucia? Driving Over Lemons and A Parrot in the Pepper They make for a very enjoyable read.

I enjoyed reading Driving Over Lemons so I looked up A Parrot in the Pepper Tree. I see that there is also a third book The Almond Blossom Appreciation Society. I now have two more books to buy.

I want to read the other two books by Chris Stewart. Driving Over Lemons is very good. I get most of my books from libraries and the other 2 are less known. Another good one is AT LEAST ONE BALCONY by Boyce Quinn about a couple's new life in Granada. I like the Alhambra Gardens, but the Royal Chapel is a moving experience.

Chris Stewart's books are always laugh aloud reading. Driving Over Lemons is, IMO, the funniest of the lot but I've read them all more than once ... and still laugh.

Another crack-you-up and LOL book about Spain is "A Load of Bull" by Tim Parfitt. He was a Brit working for Conde Nast Pub. in London in some rather menial position, was sent to Madrid for 6 weeks and ended up staying for years and being the managing director for Vogue Espana. Those who are learning Spanish will more than appreciate his writing.

A LOAD OF BULL is on the top of my list. THE ROAD FROM RONDA by Alistair Boyd is another recommendation along with its follow up THE SIERRAS OF THE SOUTH. I don't go to Spain without my well worn copy of MADRID AND CENTRAL SPAIN. It is part of the Companion Guide series, it is also by Boyd. He also wrote a Guide of Catalonia, THE ESSENCE OF CATALONIA. Hundreds of architectural monuments are described in minute detail in the latter two guidebooks. Even MM would benefit from these.

For those wanting to buy "The Almond Blossom Appreciation Society" by Chris Stewart I just got an email from Amazon (US/not sure about UK) that it is on sale at for $5.39.

My new policy is buy a book, give away a book. Easier said than done. I just don't want clutter. I have begun downloading books onto my phone. This book by Chris Stewart I will probably buy.

If you like Madrid as I, than a A Load of Bull by Tim Parfitt is a must. Glad to have met him and communite with him as went around the same spots I did growing up in Madrid
